RE: B&B Etiquette

We will be going to Ireland on an 11 day tour at the beginning of August. We will not be bringing cell phones, but plan on having internet access. As this is our first trip and we will be sight seeing on the way from place to place, we do not know when exactly we will be arriving. What should I do in this situation?

Also, I read that we should bring our own washcloths? Des the same go for full sized towels? Thank you!

Angie,

Welcome to my forum. You will get many more replies if you start your own topic rather than piggyback on this subject. Near the top of the forum is a gray button that says "Start a new Topic". Just click on that and you're set.

August is high season in Ireland. Are you planning on winging it and look for a place to stay each evening? If so, you need to be flexible and know that the really nice places may already be booked. If you are not fussy about where you stay you should be okay. But if a festival or event is on in a particular town be prepared to move on. Start looking for places to stay before dark.

You will get towels in Ireland. It's just not every place that has washcloths.

Not all B&Bs in Ireland furnish washcloths, however, all I've stayed at DO furnish either shower gel or soap.

Most DO furnish hair dryers, but if that is a requirement, it's best that you check before leaving home.

Hello,

Here are some extra tips for guest B&B Etiquette, and some are general.

1. Remember B&B are small business and rely on the income to pay a mortgage, put children through college etc....
so don't take to tripadvisor for every little thing you don't like. (i didn't like the carpets, curtains weren't new etc...)
If you have a valid complaint speak to the owner at the time rather than writing a revenue damaging review weeks later.

2. Remember you are paying usually 25-30 euro per person per night so your expectation should be realistic. A 5 star attitude can't be entertained by most.

3. Check about Children. Some B&B's don't allow children under 12 due to their own personal reason. I have encountered this before.

4. Booking a single can be difficult I remember having to call over 5 B&B when I needed a bed for the night in Galway. I was told that it wouldn't be worth it just for 1!!!

5. Some are very religious and don't allow non married or same sex couples to stay in the same room. Seriously this happens!

Brilliant first time i've seen a B&B Etiquette thread! I have stayed at many and seen some guest really be a pain in the ....! Most owners are Irish Mammys and do take insults from guests to heart. I know some owner that are terrified of getting a bad review they can't sleep!

B&B's are not 5* hotel, they are people homes looking for some extra income. Be respectful and remember this !

Respect their house rules and don't make too much noise coming home from the pub :))

Your Irish adventures sound so charming! Navigating through initial awkwardness at one guesthouse turned into a heartwarming experience by embracing kindness. The tip about phoning ahead to the next B&B is golden those unexpected moments and the allure of Ireland linger in the best daydreams.
