I'm back too soon!

I just returned from my 7 day trip and 7 days is not enough! You lose one day on each end for travel. I advise everyone to plan at least a 10 day trip. The trip was wonderful and everything met or exceeded my expectations. We landed at shannon, went to Doolin for one night then down to Dingle for 4 days then back to Doolin. We rented a car and had rented self-catering holiday houses in Doolin and Dingle. We spent most of the time in the car, driving around and sightseeing. The foot and mouth restrictions were a pain but we were so happy to be in Ireland that it didn't matter. We couldn't walk up to any castles, etc. but could only take pictures from the road. We were able to eat delicious, low cost meals at pubs (6.50 for a full plate of food). The Guinness was smooth as silk. The scenery was amazing along the Kerry coast. I can't wait to go back!

Dear kck,

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. I agree that seven days is not enough. Even when I'm there for three weeks at a time THAT is not enough! It sounds as if (like many others--me included) you have been bitten by the Ireland bug and can't wait to return. Let's hope that next time you go there will be no problems there and you can sightsee as you please.

Next best thing to Guinness in Ireland is the Guinness you can buy at your grocery store in the cans (they have a special "widget" inside that makes the consistency just right). Now if only I could find my favorite Smithwicks in the USA!

Can you describe your sel-catering accommodations? I am looking for top-notch 3 bedroom rentals. Thanks.

Hi Pat,

If you call the Irish Tourist Board in NY at 1-800-223-6470 and ask for the "Self-catering Guide" they will send you a book with photos listing thousands of places all over Ireland. They are rated from one to four stars (4 being the highest rating). Since you only want a top-notch self-catering rental you should be looking at the 4-star ones. I also have some links to self-catering. Just go to the bottom of this page and click on "Links" and look under the heading "Accommodation".

Happy travels,

Michele
