Can I wear my big fluffy robe in the conservatory?

Michele, and fellow travellers, where is it appropriate to wear those big fluffy robes provided by the nicer guesthouses and hotels? May one wear the robe in the conservatory with a candlestick? (Oh, sorry, I forgot, we're not playing "Clue") Is it polite to wear the robe to cover your bathing suit while walking through the lobby to the pool? Yes? No?

Does one wear the robe down to breakfast in one's jammies? Hubby and I are always so delighted to have those robes and so mystified about where we can wear them.

Perhaps they are for putting on when room service knocks on the door?

They are for wearing when your bathroom is not ensuite?

They are for pajama parties in the lobby?

Michele, what do you think? You are well-travelled and I know you have the answer. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

Melissa,

What an interesting question. Forget the robe and candlestick in the conservatory or at breakfast. It is best to be dressed in street clothes when wandering around your B&B or hotel in Ireland (unless you don't have an en suite room and must dash across the hall to your bathroom). A B&B owner that I knew well (since retired) was quite amused by one guest who wore her negligee into the sitting room. His wife was not amused!!

If you don't have a cover-up for a bathing suit you could wear the robe as one. Or maybe if you are a 10 you will want to show off your svelte figure and just wear your thong bikini.

Basically, the robes are for putting on after your pampering bath and lounging around your room. If you are staying at a spa hotel the robes are acceptable attire when going from your room to treatments.

Michele, I knew you would have the right answer. Shucks, I guess I can't wear my thong bikini through the lobby since I'm not a 10 anymore if I ever was...Lost my chance...Maybe the robes are also useful for covering up your lovely daughters on their way to the pool?!

Hubby and I love nice comfty B&Bs. Once I stayed in a nice hotel which actually had a sign in the lobby asking guests NOT to parade through the lobby in their swim suits! I can't remember if that was in Costa Rica or the USA...probably Costa Rica.

Hubby and I have actually had important discussions in our rooms about whether it was okay to wear the robes to the pool. Finally we found a short-cut to the pool where one didn't have to parade through the fancy lobby.

I guess one should try to see how others are viewing you when making these decisions. If I was that B&B owners wife I would have helped that lady in the negligee into a nice fluffy robe! I can't believe she wore it into a pubic place in a B&B! EEEk!
