Getting From Shannon to Killarney

I am planning my first trip to Ireland in late Jan., early Feb.  I will be in Bristol, England for two weeks prior to this.  My first qustion is the best way to get to Ireland from Bristol.  I have looked into everything from trains to planes, and still can't get enough good information.  I plan on Killarney as being my base, and seeing all the sites from there.  I am really interested in a slow, relaxing vacation with horseback riding, and relaxing sightseeing.

If I happen to fly to Ireland I will most likely land in Shannon, but I can't figure out how to get from Shannon to Killarney.  I am not very sold on renting a car since I will be by myself and will be arriving in Shannon after dark.  Does anyone have any suggestions.  I am very excited, but am find the process of planning a little intimidating.

stablerdonnia,

There are many airlines that fly from Bristol England to Cork, Dublin and Shannon Ireland. Go to this website for more info: http://www.bristolairport.co.uk/

You would be better off flying into either Dublin or Cork, since you can get a train from either place to Killarney. If you fly into Shannon you will have to take a bus. Go to my "Transport" page for links to public transportation in Ireland.

If you arrive in Ireland after dark, I suggest that you spend that night near the airport and continue on to Killarney the next morning. There is plenty to do in Killarney and many day tours you can take. The tourist office will be able to assist you with those.

Have fun!

I'm told it's quite easy to get a cheap flight over to Ireland from just about anywhere in England. While I was in Dublin I met a girl who had come over from Liverpool for the weekend for less than ten Euros! From Dublin it is very easy to get a train to Killarney. I think one leaves almost every hour. It's a wonderful ride, about three and a half hours, and the station in Killarney is almost right downtown. If you fly into Cork then the train ride is only half as long. If you don't want to spend any time in either Dublin or Cork, and want to maximize your time in Killarney, then it might be best to fly into Cork. But experienced travellers say wait until you get to England to buy your flight to Ireland, that's how to get the best deal.
