Lovely Leitrim

Just returned from a very quick visit (4 days) to County Leitrim.

As a very frequent visitor to the area, the wife and myself usually stay with friends, but as it was a treat for my 50th no we were a larger party, and stayed in a local B&B, the Old Rectory, in the small village of Fenagh, a few miles south of Ballinamore.

And what a wonderful place it was, an old rectory with converted outbuildings for Self Catering Apartments. The apartments are set around a courtyard, which makes for a great sun-trap (not often I get to use that phrase when discussing Ireland biggrin). You gets views of both Fenagh Lake and the Abbey ruins from the B&B, which is also a working farm

As the purpose of the visit was drinking and visiting friends, we knew we would not surface in time for the breakfasts, but I'm told they are both tasty and good value. The well stocked kitchen came in very useful for our all day breakfast lol.

Fenagh itself is a 2 pub / one shop village in south Leitrim, a little off the tourist trail, but surprisingly full of historical interest, the old Abbey, the Crannog on Fenagh Lake, ancient earthworks etc. It has a heritage center that is full of information. The 2 pubs are splendid, the Abbey Bar being my favourate.

We visit the area at least twice a year (this year three), and have done for many years. As I say, its not an area frequented by many tourists, which is a surprise to me, but anyone who wants information on Lovely Leitrim, please feel free to ask.

Fenagh is where one of my ancestors, Robert Telford, was from...

The Rectory is a terrific stop-over...and yes the breakfasts are delicious... The Currans hold the key for the Abbey

I have yet to understand why Leitrim...and Fenagh itself...are so largely overlooked by the tourists... They miss so much heritage and natural beauty.

I was actually just looking at the Rectory this morning... trying to determine if it will work for my merry band of eight or nine next June

Congrats on your 50th and glad to hear you got to party in Ireland. I'm happy to hear that you found just the right place for your 4 (too short) days in Leitrim.
