Hi All, 

I am planning a trip to Ireland with my wife from May 17-26, and I we are going to spend two days in Dublin up front and then rent a car from the 19-26. 

There are countless threads here and elsewhere on renting a car in Ireland, and I feel like I've read them all. I have a World Mastercard, but I'd rather have the peace of mind from getting a fully-covered car at the rental agency. 

That being said, the cheapest option by far is coming up as Argus Car Rentals at 58 euros a day for an Automatic VW Golf with Super CDW, an extra driver (my wife), and the glass/tire waiver. It's hard to believe that rate is sometimes nearly 300 euros cheaper than the competition!

It's still by no means a reasonable or affordable rate, but I understand that Ireland is a tiny country that can't be bothered with automatic transmissions or reasonable insurance rates. I did a search on here, and there are a few ancient threads from 2006-7 on Argus, and I'm wondering if anyone has a more recent experience they'd be willing to share on the company. 

Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Argus are an agency,, They will not be the people giving you the keys to your hire car,, They won't even know who will.

Consider that most quotes will be in the same ball park and some bloke selling hotdogs outside.. buy the dog or see the game.

I would always go direct when renting in Ireland, we do not have the same protections that other countries have when it comes to the sale of Car Hire and agencies are only obliged to give the basic hire prices.. You need a quote at the Collection Desk price.. and the fuel policy.. and the extras!

Argus are consolidators, rather than an actual car hire company.  Since the actual company that you are 'placed' with determines the Terms and Conditions of the Car Hire, you are almost always 'better off' -- read that as 'Hassle-Free' dealing DIRECT.   hmm

SO many questions would need to be answered -- Fuel policy, source of CDW and Excess cover, excluded items, etc., etc ... That it would be impossible to say whether the Argus quote is either, 'Too Good To Pass Up' --

OR -- 'Too Good To Be True' ...   confuse  confuse

Thanks for the replies. You're both probably right - better not to risk it. I'll bite the bullet and book through Dan Dooley. Appreciate the advice.
