Into Shannon out of Dublin sites in days and pubs with music in the evening

Hi Michelle ,

i'm planning a trip to Ireland for 4 fun loving gals this May . I want to fly into Shannon a do the beautiful  west coast of Ireland . We are hoping to stay in fun towns with live music in the evenings at the pubs .... Killarney , Gallway and Dublin are some of the town of interest .

Can you suggest a good town to stay in for our first night that with not be to far from Bunratty Castle ?  We will be going to the Bunratty Medieval Castle Banquet that evening  . I do want to stay in a town where we will be able to walk around and explore during our first day . Also , I'm want to take a taxis to the Banquet so we will not have to worry about driving .

We are considering self drive and/or chauffeur for this trip . Do you know of any reasonably priced chauffeurs to get us from town to town with some sites along the way ?

Maureen,

This past Oct we stayed at the Bunratty manor hotel.  It was only about a 5-10 minute walk to the castle.  Also stayed in Shannon at the airport hotel the last night in Ireland, and took a taxi from the hotel to the castle and back as we didn't want to drive after drinking generous amounts of mead and wine at the Medieval banquet at Bunratty castle. The taxi cost 18 Euros each way.  We had turned our car in 1 day early and the savings on the car rental took care of the taxi bill.

If you get into Shannon early, a taxi would be a good option to get to Bunratty and you could spend that first jet lag day just touring the castle, spending a couple hours in the fresh air of Bunratty Folk Park adjacent to the castle, check out Durty Nellies pub, and that plus the banquet might be enuf that 1st day in Ireland. Then you could take a taxi back to SNN to get a rental car or have your driver pick you up at the hotel. We had a great evening meal at the Creamery Pub right across the  street from the castle.  Good luck!

Dan

Welcome to Michele's Forum!  biggrin

I've moved your post to where it should be so that you can better receive advice and info.  I really like spending time in Ennis, but if the aim the first day is Bunratty and the Banquet, then it makes very good sense to stay IN Bunratty.

One of the nicest B&Bs in Bunratty ( one of Michele's 'Picks' and a personal favorite of mine) is Headley Court   http://www.headleycourt.net/

I always Self-Drive as it affords maximum freedom.  There are, however, a NUMBER of small and large bus tour companies based in Galway, Killarney and Dublin.

I've heard good reviews for Gene O'Sullivan of Glengarriff Tours---(glengarriffcabs@hotmail.com) but I have NO personal experience.

I will second Bob's recommendation of Headley Court in Bunratty. Great host, B&B and breakfast. It is a couple of miles from the castle. If you want to be right across the street from the castle try Bunratty Manor or Bunratty Castle Hotel.

Chauffeur driven cars tend to be very expensive. Self-drive will be least expensive.

Let us know if you have more questions as your trip proceeds.
