As to money: http://www.irelandyes.com/money.html ATMs are your friend -- just make SURE you notify the issuer (and Credit Cards!) that you will be in Ireland and Northern Ireland so that they don't freeze your cards over 'Suspicious Activity'.

Unless you can handle the large 'Hold' on your credit card, buying the insurances may be your only option. However, a rental car isn't your only option. You might consider a combination of car rental and public transport, since much of your stated interests in the North center around two basic areas and there are local tours available from Belfast.

Thanks Bob. Part of my concern is for the first two days. I won't have anywhere to put my luggage, so that's why I'm thinking rental car for at least that period. I'll land in Dublin and would then like to pick up my car with a no hassle, no hidden fee, just hand over the keys experience and head directly to Northern Ireland. Are there safe places to park and just sleep in the car to save hotel expenses?

Anyone recognize this tour? It has great reviews and they would pick me up at the hotel. Recommendations for affordable but clean hotels in Belfast?

I'm beginning to think just don't worry. Fly to Dublin (maybe get some info from other travelers on the flight) and just kind of go where the wind takes me.

The Premier Inn hotel group tends to have much lower rates plus they are good, clean basic lodgings. I've stayed at the one in Belfast Titanic Quarter area. A step down from hotels are B&Bs. Looking at 35 - 45 pounds per night. But at some B&Bs sometimes there is a "single supplement" when only one person uses a two-person room. Best to ask in advance about that. Hostels are another lower-priced option.

Avis was my lowest rate car last time. Since it will only be for a couple of days just buy the CDW and super CDW. Shouldn't break the bank.

Try to use your credit cards wherever possible. Hopefully you have one that doesn't add a "foreign transaction fee". You might need cash for parking, tips, some B&Bs and admissions.

If you have the car then do the Giant's Causeway and Antrim coast yourself.
