Home Again ... Home Again ... Hot Diggity Dog!

After MUCH dithering and discussion, my wife and I decided to return to Ireland this year on an abbreviated visit.  I found acceptable tickets into and out of SNN (pricier than last year, unfortunately) that take us from SRQ (Sarasota) to SNN via JFK and return us to RSW (Fort Meyers), via BOS.  BOTH trans-Atlantic flights are via ASL (Aer Lingus) on 757 -- but, SHANNON, rather than Dublin!!!!

Irma played havoc with the planning stage and Jose and Maria are still generating a certain, 'apprehension', but I was determined NOT to miss out on my annual, Ireland 'Fix'!  biggrin   biggrin

We arrive in SNN at 5:00 AM, on 26 September and I've booked a Compact, Manual with Dan Dooley (via Fox)  for $123.07.  That's by waiving the Insurances, using my MasterCard coverage, so there will be the requisite Initial Fuel Cost (est: 80 - 100 Euro) and the inevitable Fee / paperwork charge of 25 Euro -- and a Deposit / Hold of 3,000 Euro in the event of damage.  I am also still covered through 28 Oct by my Annual Excess policy that I purchased last year from Worldwide Insure for about $58 that covers tires, glass, wrong fuel and lost key (which MC does NOT).

We are booked into An Cruiscin Lan Hotel in Spiddal for the night of 27 September in a Twin Room at 110 Euro, B&B.  The next morning we have seats reserved on the 10 AM flight to Inishmore, via Aer Arann, at 49 Euro, per person, Return.  We plan to overnight at Tigh Fitz B&B, where our twin room is priced at 95 Euro.  I chose Tigh Fitz as we intend to spend MOST of our time exploring the vicinity at the East end of the Island .  We return the following morning (28 Sept) on the 10:15 AM flight.

From the airport, we'll drive down to Kilkee (route determined by weather), where we'll spend the night at The Strand Guesthouse -- Twin Room, B&B, 90 Euro.

On the morning of 29 September, we'll drive to Kilrush and take one of the last ferries of the season out to Scattery Island -- after which, we'll take the Shannon Ferry (17.1 Euro Pre-paid or 19 Euro, Cash) one-way from Killimer to Tarbert  -- and then, drive to Banna Beach Resort, where we have a reservation for a two bedroom holiday home for three nights (249 Euro, plus 10 Euro per night for electric -- or 279 Euro, total) which gives us a base to revisit Dingle and Killarney, as well as attend a family event in Tralee.  The washer and drier also affords us the option of packing along fewer clothes!  biggrin biggrin

On the morning of 2 October, we'll make our way down to Drimoleague (near Bantry), where we'll spend two nights at my wife's cousin's country weekend home and perform a bit of genealogy research.  On 4 October, we'll move on to East Cork for a single night (Wednesday, 4 Oct) -- before setting off to visit Holycross Abbey and a few, previously missed other sites.  Nothing booked yet, but I'm leaning towards a night at Abbey Court, in Nenagh.

We plan to follow that up with two nights in either Bunratty (at the incomparable,  Headley Cort B&B,or possibly a bit further afield, as our return flight departs SNN at Noon, on 8 October.

Still a fair bit 'Up In The Air' ( and a tad of 'Ball Juggling' still needing to be done!  hmm  hmm )  but that's the BONES of our plans.

Yet ANOTHER 'snag'!  Just received an email from the Strand, cancelling my reservation, as they are planning to have their Heating system repaired / replaced.  Just re-booked at the Bay View, in Kilkee for $120, B&B.   furious   furious

It's NOT a huge difference, in terms of either location OR price.

Kilkee is getting famous, Bit has just left and we are there on Sunday. If you get anywhere near here you know the door is always open.

Thanks, Tony!  We should be 'closer in' on 6 and 7 October.  If so, I'll try to give you a call to try and arrange a 'meet up'.  Won't be using Vodaphone this trip, so I might actually have a signal to work with!    hmm   hmm

Great to hear another trip is in the works. Sounds like a great trip. I have a good rec in Kilrush too, if interested. Are you headed down to Loop Head?

It's nice that your flight is at noon. You don't have to do a dawn patrol to get to an early departure. When in Bunratty (or nearby) you could day trip to Kilmallock or Lough Gur. Have you been to either?

Hey, Adare Manor is re-opening this autumn. Two nights there? $$$$$$

The overnight at Kilkee is to stage for the Scattery Island trip (and Round Tower #2 of this trip! ).  I promised my wife a plethora of previously missed sites, but there WILL be a few 're-visits'.  aww   aww

I've been to Lough Gur twice --- 2002 and 2016 -- and Kilmallock, three or four times.  Curiously, that little Museum has always been closed whenever I've dropped by!  confuse   confuse   confuse

Do you have a working email address for Headley Court?  I've not gotten a reply back from the two that I've tried.  hmm  hmm

Dinner at Madigan's, Inis Mor.  Visited Europe's Smallest Church and my Round Tower. Our 10 AM flight was weather delayed until  1:30!  Knew that the Ferry was "iffy" but didn't realize that flights could be too! . Took advantage of the delay to drive the 'L' road from Rossaveal to Oughterard to get scones and tea at Ma'am Cross. biggrin  biggrin

Lunch at Caragh, in Killarney. Scattery Island was third time unlucky due to weather. Inis Mor was a delight, but may need to stick to the ferry from here on out!

Kilkee was Grand. Enjoying family time in Banna Strand / Tralee, but WiFi "iffy" in Banna.

Today's lunch at Jack's, in Glengarriff.  Toasted Specials and Chips with a side of homemade Tartar Sauce! Close to heaven.  WestCork for the next two nights -- near Skibb --

biggrin  biggrin  biggrin

Finally made a stop at Molly Galavan's and Lorge's.  Drive has gotten pricey!

Departed SNN on Sunday, Noon for our flight home via BOS.  Wow!  Arrived three hours early and spent 1 1/2 sitting at the Gate!   All-in-one, US-Style Security screening was a first -- Anyone know if they are doing that now in Dublin, too?   Certainly saves a lot of time, although that COULD have been the hour, as well.  confuse    confuse     confuse

Lots of coughing and hacking going on, all around the various gates -- and quite full flights.  Shortly after arriving in BOS, I started feeling ill -- and apparently, I wasn't alone!  furious  furious

Our in-coming Jet Blue flight passengers were held up from deplaning, as Medical personnel needed to assist an ill passenger on board.  OUR departure was delayed slightly as a consequence, and upon landing in Fort Meyers, WE were held on the plane while Medical removed yet another ill passenger from OUR flight.  Got home about 11 PM (4 AM Irish Time!)   and collapsed into bed.  Spent most of the following 36 hours hoping to feel  as if I MIGHT still live and for most of the next 24, I've been well enough to be charitably described as, "Ambulatory" . . .  bleh   bleh

Stories to tell, though.  Pictures to Post.  Details to share (possibly -- 'Over-Share'? aww  )   and costs to analyze.  biggrin  biggrin

Welcome back Bob. I tried to post the other day from a tablet but there was a glitch. Yes, they have the customs and pre-clearance at Dublin Airport too. Hope you feel better soon. Is flu season starting early? Looking forward to hearing all the details of your adventure.
