RE: Bob's 2017 'Whirlwind Tour' -- In (Possibly Too Much) Detail

I have rented with Fox several times. They use Dooley so Dooley's rules apply to the rental. I have not actually been charged when waiving the insurance and letting my card cover it. If you look at your credit card info online you will see what you think is a charge but it is only a "hold". You can actually phone them and talk with them: https://www.foxrentacar.com/en/contact-us.html If you want to speak with Dooley: https://www.dandooley.com/

Each sales rep will tell you something different. You can call 50 times and get 60 different answers. I have never had a problem using my credit card insurance with Fox/Dooley and I haven't actually been asked to provide the cc letter at the counter.

You have done all your homework. I think you are safe to go.

Thanks Michele.

The only concern with being charged the 3000, then getting it refunded if no damage is the conversion from Euro to USD.  When we went on our last trip, the Dooley Fuel Fee was charged and then they refunded it.  Due to differences in the conversion rate, we still wound up paying a small amount.  Like the charge came to $120 USD but the credit was only $117 USD.  Not sure if those were the exact figures, but you get the idea.

In my case it's slightly different. I will not be using CC coverage, but rather Rental Car Damage coverage that is part of the Trip Insurance (Worldwide Traveler Protection Plus) that I purchased for this trip. Below is the text of the coverage pertaining to Rental Car Damage, which is part of this Trip Insurance:

COVERAGE N
RENTAL CAR DAMAGE

We will pay the lesser of:
a. the cost of repairs and rental charges imposed by the rental company while the car is being
repaired;
b. the Actual Cash Value of the car; or
c. the amount shown in the Confirmation of Benefits.

agreement.
Coverage is not provided for loss due to:
1. any obligation of You, a Traveling Companion or Family Member traveling with You assumed
under any agreement (except insurance collision deductible);
2. rentals of trucks, campers, trailers, motor bikes, motorcycles, recreational vehicles or Exotic

3. any loss which occurs if You or anyone traveling with You are in violation of the rental

FYI, I also got a letter from the insurer. Also, I am on the Facebook Postcards From Ireland group. Didn't realize you had set that up as well.

Any help with suggestions to eat in or near Swords, also for Drogheda.

Here is what I posted on TA, which includes some info on what we are looking for:

We leave next weekend for our 3 week trip. Our last night we are staying at a B&B in Swords. Looking for suggestions for somewhere to enjoy our last night. Would like it to be "somewhat unique or special". We usually prefer pubs that also serve food vs. a regular restaurant. Would prefer to not have to drive too far away. And if they have Trad Music that doesn't start really late at night, that would be a bonus. That will be Friday May 18th. All help would be most appreciated.

I have not stayed in Swords in several years and the place I ate I would not recommend. Generally when I am in the area I stay at Premier Inn before a flight. Suggest you ask your B and B hosts for suggestions. They rarely steer you wrong.

Near Drogheda is Monasterboice Inn. I have never had a bad meal there. Triple House in Termonfeckin has good food in an old historic building.

Yes, I set up Postcards From Ireland group on FB a while ago. Never dreamed it would have so many members.

Michele & Bob, just thought I'd let you know, we're just back last night from our 20 day trip and a full report will be coming. But as to the 20 day car rental using Fox, (car from Dooley). I had a TERRIFIC price for the smallest Automatic I could get, (was a Nissan Micra). The rental with the 25 fee for using my own insurance came to about $300 USD. I can update the exact amount when I subtract the fuel refund, 55, which has yet to process (only turned the car in yesterday). But unlike Steve (recent TA post), my experience was great. There was minor issues when we got the car, a hubcap missing and various scratches, etc. Noted on our paperwork and I took photos. They did not even look to see if those were there when I checked the car in. A very quick once-over to see I was obviously not in any accident. I had all kinds of paperwork to support my third-party insurance. The car had about 54,000 KM on it, By the registration code it had been in service about a year. Glad I had such a small car. On our last trip we had 3 other people and we had a Ford Galaxy (bigger than the car this time) but I managed.

Also, our last night we ate in Swords at The Old Schoolhouse Restaurant, very happy with the meal, decor and fairly reasonable prices.

Glad to hear it all worked out!  biggrin  Sounds like you got a GREAT deal on an automatic -- Interestingly enough, the ONLY Auto I've ever driven in Ireland was a well-worn, 2010 Ford Galaxy that I rented from Hertz, in June of 2013.  I always prefer a 'seasoned' rental car, rather than one that is shiny and new, as they usually are much more forgiving of minor scratches and dings when you return it!

I'm looking forward to your report.

So I got my fuel credit and the final amount I paid for the 20 day rental of an automatic Nissan Micra came out to be $297.21 USD. (Using my own insurance)

Still finalizing my trip report. It's a lot for 20 days.
