July 2007 Itinerary - Take 2

Trying this again - hopefully this one will be more feasible

Quick recap:  My fiance (age 29) and I (age 26) will be travelling to Ireland on our honeymoon, arriving the morning of July 24th in Dublin and departing August 5th from Shannon.

Tuesday: Dublin.  Will probably do the hop-on-hop-off bus as we'll probably be a little jet-lagged and may not want to do as much walking.

Wednesday:  Dublin

Thursday:  Pick up rental car and depart Dublin in the morning.  Drive up to the Bushmills area (260 km).  We realize that it will be a long drive, but are figuring we'll stop along the way (Carrickfergus?) to break it up.

Friday:  Bushmills.  Giant's Causeway/Dunluce Castle/Carrick-a-rede.  We'll play it by ear which ones we do.  Whatever we don't do on Friday, we'll do Saturday morning.

Saturday:  Drive Bushmills - Donegal (176 km).

Sunday:  Donegal

Monday:  Drive Donegal - Westport (165 km).

Tuesday:  Westport

Wednesday:  Overnight in Ashford Castle (about 43 km from Westport)

Thursday:  Head to Doolin (112 km)

Friday:  Day trip to Aran Islands?

Saturday:  Possibly drive to Bunratty for closer proximity to airport.

Sunday:  flight leaves at 9:35 am from Shannon

Does this itinerary look better?  We cut Dingle out - we're just going to have to go back to Ireland at some point and do the southern route!

tmac,

Much, much better! This one sounds like a keeper. Definitely spend your last night near the airport. Bunratty is about a 10 minute drive. You will have to leave your accommodations pretty early for your flight.

Thank you

For our home base in the Bushmills area, what town would be a good place to stay?  While I am perfectly content to be in a quiet place enjoying the scenery, my fiance would rather be close to towns/pubs/restaurants (preferably walking distance).  Portballintrae looks very quaint, but very small.  Same with Bushmills.  Where else would be good without being overcrowded?

tmac,

I am assuming you want something larger than Bushmills? In that case, try Ballycastle. All the beachside towns can be crowded on weekends or if a festival is on. It will depend on your exact dates.
