Where: Inis Mor (Aran Islands) will be the substitute for Craggy Island
Why: The comedy series Father Ted has legions of fans worldwide
For those poor, deprived souls who have never watched Fr. Ted, Dougal or Fr. Jack's exploits on the fictional Craggy Island go directly to BBC America or your nearest video store, Netflix, Ebay or wherever you can find the DVDs and order one of the funniest series ever. It is crass, contains bad language, makes fun of the Catholic church, priests, bishops, nuns and whatever else gets in the way. In other words, it is hilarious.
I must embarrassingly admit that I haven't been tuned in. I just checked BBC America and it seems that the show is not currently running. It sounds like my kind of show.
My husband has a Fr. Ted fest in our living room every once in a while. He got the DVDs on Ebay. I believe there are three separate series to buy. I have to admit when I first saw a Fr. Ted episode on Irish TV I didn't "get it" at first. I was probably distracted with doing other things at the same time. But the more you watch the more endearing and fun it becomes. My husband even likes Fr. Jack who is despicable. Evidently in real life the actor who plays Fr. Jack is quite debonair. Unfortunately, the series ended with the untimely death of the actor who played Fr. Ted.
