Info on Kilkee and Kilrush

My original intinerary was to drive from Dingle to Ballyvaughn, stopping to see the cilffs on the way.  At this point of my trip I have two full days left.  It has been suggested that I drive from dingle to Kilkee.  From Kilkee I can walk out to see the cliffs, drive down to a lighthouse, taking a scenic route, and stop by the Bridges of Ross.  Then stay in Kilrush for the evening.

In the morning, head out to perhaps Lahinch (been there twice before) and to the Cliffs of Moher, drive around the coast road up to Ballyvaughn (for lunch at Monk's), After lunch head back to Bunratty for our traditional irish night and overnight in Bunratty.

This sounds very interesting and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Kilkee or Kilrush?

Irish 57,

Kilkee is a small beach resort town with a population of about 1,500. In the summer and on nice weekends the Irish swell the population looking for fun, sun and sandcastles. It has a very nice beach surrounded by some cliffs, with walks available along the coast.

Kilrush is a market town with a population of less than 3,000. It has a good harbor and marina from which boats take tourists on dolphin-watching tours and for tours of Scattery Island.

Either place would be fine for an overnight stay.

There's a small town called Cooraclare, just up the way from Kilrush (15 min) that has wonderful traditional music on Wed and Sat at Kelly's Pub. When we were there, people from adjacent towns came and had an impromptu jam session starting at 10:00pm. Multi-generaltional; a mix of instrumental, voice, and poetry. Well worth it. It spoiled us from there on out. Have a wonderful time, wherever you find yourself.

I was thinking of staying at Hillcrest View in Kilrush.  Anyone been there?

Irish 57,

Hillcrest View is listed on my "Lodgings" page and reviewed in my book. I have stayed there and it is a lovely B&B with nice hosts.

Since Hillcrest View is out (all booked for my Aug 5 date) I've sent out inquiries to the following B&B's :

Clarke's in Kilrush
Ashgrove in Kilrush

BayView in Kilkee (this one is in the town with a view of the Atlantic. It is supposingly above the pub.  Noise?????)

Irish 57,

I would be worried about noise when staying in a room over a pub.

Yes, I thought about the noise over the pub.  Decided on Nolan's in Kilkee. Here's what I have booked:

2 nights in Kilkenny @Alcantra
2 nights in Kenmare @ Driftwood B&B
2 Nights in Dingle @ Heaton's Guesthouse
1 Night in Kilkee @ Nolan's B&B
1 night in Bunratty @ Bunratty Lodge

Now all we have to do is wait for July!!!!

Irish 57,

I am glad to hear you reservations are finally made. I do suggest reconfirming a week or so before your trip as that will reassure you and your hosts. It sounds like everything is in place for your trip. Do you have your car rental yet? July will be here before you know it!
