WE'RE GOING ON AN ESCORTED TOUR WITH CIE TOURS, SO WE WON'T HAVE ALOT ROOM TO CARRY MUCH. DO Y0U KNOW IF THERE ARE ALOT OF SHOPS ETC THAT SHIP WHAT IS PURCHASED? DO WE CLAIM THEM AND PAY A DUTY TAX? WE'RE GOING THROUGH SHANNON, KILLARNEY,Cahirciveen,Waterville,Sneem,Blarney Castle ,Kilkenny, AND DUBLIN. THANKS, DEB
I know that the Blarney Woolen Mills will ship for you. They do calculate in shipping costs. Most of your larger shops will ship, as well. However, you will not have them for sometime after returning home. I purchased several large pieces, some china and a sculpture, home from Ireland in July of 2005 and received them in late October.
Many of the shops around Ireland will mail your purchases to your home for you. Some even have free shipping if you purchase a certain euro amount of merchandise. So do ask before shopping. As Bit has said it can take time to receive your purchases. If it is something you need right away you may want to carry it with you.
Don't forget to get your VAT tax forms (for non EU citizens). Many shops will deduct the tax at point of purchase. There is a small fee for the service. However, you must fill out and turn in the forms at the airport when departing Ireland. Otherwise you will find the tax added onto your credit card if you forget. You have 90 days after your return to mail the tax forms back to Ireland if you don't have time to do it at the airport. Be sure to read the fine print.
When your packages arrive in your country of residence there may be duty due on them. It really depends on how much you buy. If you are a US resident look at this website: http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/
I used to buy and have things shipped home, but stopped when I paid more for insurance at Blarney Woolen Mills than I did for my purchases. If they were unbreakables, I'd have them sent without insurance.
The free shipping from Blarney Woolen Mills can take three months...in fact, it tends to be three months to the day before it arrives. Three years in a row, I called to inquire about my package after almost three months and it arrived within days of my call. The wait can be annoying, but it can be like Christmas when it finally arrives.
Blarney Woolen Mills were great about replacing a vase that arrived broken. The replacement arrived within a two weeks and they didn't make me send back the broken stuff.
I had a friend who bought a huge amount at the Nicholas Mosse Factory near Kilkenny. Several items arrived broken. Nicholas Mosse replaced every piece no questions asked, and the replacements where packed much better than the original shipment.
Hey, while we're on the topic of breaking dishes, if any of you find yourself with broken Irish china or pottery...I happen to have a use for it. I turn it in to shard jewelry. Take a peak at www.lamplighterstudio.com.
Thanks so much for all of the info. As the time gets closer (April), the more nervous I become!! It's nice to find a forum that has so many answers!! Deb
No need to be nervous! Since you are going on a tour everything will be taken care of for you. If you have any other questions or need reassurance, this is the place. We don't bite and there are lots of friendly people here.
