Flight Booked and now the Itinerary

Hello to all!  Well, our flights are booked and I've taken your great suggestions.  We cut out the Dublin side for this trip and are staying on the West and South sides.  Now I could really use some great suggestions on the itinerary.  We will be flying Continental from Orlando on May 7th arriving very early into Shannon on May 8th.  We will be renting a car from Kemwel and driving.  The trip will end May 14th when we fly out of Shannon in the morning.  This will give us 6 full days and 6 nights there.

The areas we would like to cover are from the Cliffs of Moher down to Dingle, the Ring of Kerry, Cork, and Waterford.  Any suggestions on how to handle this?  Also, I've been looking into places to stay and am fond of the Cahernane House in Killarney.  Has anyone had an experiences there?  I was thinking this looked like a great place to spend 2 nights.

Thanks for any and all help.  You all have been great!  Michele, I will be placing an order for your March book very soon.

Dayna,

Congratulations on booking your flight.  If you want to see Dingle, Cork, Killarney and Waterford, you might consider leaving the Cliffs of Moher for another visit over. Even with leaving out the Cliffs of Moher, that is an awful lot of ground to cover in 6 days.

Your intinerary might look something like:

Day 1, 2, 3 - Killarney
Day 4 & 5 - Dingle
Day 6 - Ennis or Bunratty

Use your first day, after arriving in Killarney to explore Killarney, the second day to do the Ring of Kerry & the third to do a day trip to Cork. You could consider a long day trip from Killarney(emphasis on long) to Waterford or save Waterford for another trip when you come in from Dublin.

I hope this helps some. Enjoy your adventure!

Slan Agus Beannacht,

Bit

I'm bummed to hear that I may not fit that all in.  We were really looking forward to the Cliffs of Moher.  If we left Waterford for another trip, would we be missing out on a lot????  Which location would we take more away from, the Cliffs area or the Waterford area?

Dayna,

If I had to choose one over the other, I would choose the Cliffs any day. Waterford isn't a favorite because it is more of an industrial atmosphere. You will miss the Waterford Factory, Reginald's Tower and several other architectual sites.  You could make the Cliffs on day 6 and then return to Bunratty for a last night's dinner at Bunratty's Corn Barn. It will be a long day but well worth it. You can get an early start, catch the Killmer/Tarbert Ferry and then follow the coast road to the Cliffs.

Just make sure that you don't rush whilst on Dingle Peninsula and in the Killarney area. There is so much to see that you will scarcely remember what it was that you missed. Besides, you always need a reason to go back!

Bit

Great to know about the Tarbert Ferry.  I will use that for sure!  Also, I think we will try to make the dinner at the Corn Barn at Bunratty Folk Park... sounds great.  There is a B&B called Bunratty Meadows I may look into staying at our last night.  Our flight leaves Shannon at 9am.

Is Killarney central enough to stay at for 2 nights and enjoy the Dingle and Kerry areas?  I was thinking of doing that and then heading over to Cork and staying for a night or two somewhere over in that area.  Any suggestions for a town to stay in over there?

How does this sound?
Land in Shannon early Tuesday.
1 night in Doolin and seeing the Cliffs
Take the Tarbert Ferry and head down to the Dingle / Kerry area.
2 nights in Killarney
Over to Cork
2 nights in the Cork area (or maybe 1 and use the extra somewhere else?)
Take the main road N20 from Cork up to Bunratty
1 night in this area (or maybe 2?) before we fly home

Dayna,

I'm sure you are very excited about getting your flights booked. Now the trip seems like much more of a reallity, doesn't it? Bit's advice is spot on. May I ask what is drawing you to Cork? What did you want to see and do there?

Michele

P.S. I have a very special offer from a fabulous hotel overlooking the lakes of Killarney for my readers. Stay tuned while I finalize the details.

Here's a suggestion for a pleasurable 6 night trip. Head toward Kinvara for an early lunch. Next tour the Burren down to Doolin and Overnight at Susan Daly's with Dinner at Gus O'connors ,within 100 yards from your B&B(.visit the cliffs an hour before dusk or late afternoon). Day #2 down the coast over the Ferry to Dingle thru the Conor Pass.  Overnight at Bambury's Guesthouse ,close to town. Either spend another night here and tour the Dingle Penninsula or stay another night in Killarney .On to Killarney, for a night. Tour Muckross house or take a Trap Ride at the Gap of Dunloe.Great shopping town If you did not stay in Dingle  stay another night here and see a show(pub) tour Ross Castle or Muckross farms .Next day do the Ring counterclockwise making various stops along the route ending up at Kenmare for night# 5. A grand Market town . Then off to Bunratty and the Corn Dance show at night after touring Bunratty castle and farms. Suggest Bunratty Villa right down the road

Hi Michele,

Although we are already booked into a BandB in Killarney for 4 nights in May, your "special offer" interests me.  Will anxiously await your posting.  How soon do to think that will be?

Wonderful sugggestions for the itinerary!  THANK YOU!  I looked into each location you suggested and they are very promising.  I'll keep you updated as we plan further.

I also look forward to Michele's special deal in Killarney.

Michele... you questioned what interests me in Cork.  I'm not too familiar with the area yet, but I do know it has the Blarney Castle and maybe some quaint fishing villages?  Plus it will be a good point for us to take the "interstate" or main road back North to the Bunratty area.  Why do you ask?  I think if I convince my husband to leave out Waterford, then he'll probably want to at least make it over to Cork.

So much to see, so little time!

Dayna,

I consider Cork & Waterford as more of a destination when touring the Eastern & southeastern areas, even though Cork is more South Central. Neither Dingle nor Killarney should be short changed, IMHO. Each needs two nights so that the area can be fully explored. As you reach the Cliffs prior to Doolin, might I suggest  taking the coast road to the Cliffs and then completing the circle and overnighting in Ennis or perhaps look in to Moher Lodge in Liscannor, which is walking distance to the Cliffs? (Okay, Okay, everybody pick their jaws off the, yes, I am steering someone away from Doolin) Unless you are considering a Cliffs of Moher Cruise, in which case, Doolin is the logical choice and I would recommend the Doolin Activity Lodge.

You will find "quaint" fishing villages throughout the Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry and along the Coast of Clare. I know that I wouldn't go to Cork just for Blarney Castle and the "rock". There are better castles to be seen, again, IMHO. I would rather have a day at Rock of Cashel, myself.

Set an easy pace for yourselves, you will love the experiences in the off chance moments that you will only find when taking your time. Cork, Blarney and Waterford will still be there on your next visit, I promise! There is so much to do on both Dingle Peninsula & in The Killarney area to create fantastic memories and whet your appetite for a return trip and a longer stay.

Slan go Foill,

Bit

Another question, should I stay for a couple of nights in Killarney or Kenmare?  I'm stumped on that right now.

Dayna,

I like Kenamre because it is so much smaller than Killarney and it has a nice feel to it. Can't explain it. I stayed 5 nights in Killarney at a five star hotel and enjoyed Kenmare more and stayed in just a guesthouse.

Good luck on your trip and I know you'll enjoy it.

Dayna,

I love Kenmare, myself and the drive to Killarney isn't long should you want to spend a day exploring Killarney town, itself. That being said, there is also an advantage to staying in Killarney, though when I stayed there, I stayed on the outskirts. Killarney will be crowded, more so than Kenmare. Of course, whilst staying in Kenmare, you will have to decide between driving the Ring of Beara or the Ring of Kerry, both stunning in their own right. I, myself, preferred the Ring of Beara, as, when I was there, it was less traveled than the Ring of Kerry. It also has its own intense, rugged beauty that is difficult to put into words. Kenmare is known for its food and for its quiet.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint, you will be there a few days after the Rally of the Lakes (May 5 & 6) and will be too early for the Walking Festival (May 26 is its start). The down side is that you will miss all of the fun on both ends. The upside is that you will enjoy less crowds and easier access to lodgings. For a real treat, take a look at Tara Farm. It is just outside of Kenmare and has lovely grounds all its own.

Dayna,

The reason I asked about Cork was to determine what you wanted to see there. With such a short time you might be perfectly happy skipping Cork. Blarney Castle is a ruin in a lovely parkland setting, however there are better castles to see. You might get your castle fill with Bunratty and Ross Castle in Killarney.

I know the urge is there to "see it all" but if you can possibly fit in a couple of 2 or 3-night stays you will be much happier.

As to Killarney or Kenmare, it probably depends on what you want to do in the area. I love Kenmare but Killarney is larger and is strategically located. I agree that the Beara peninsula is less-traveled and a wonderful day trip. Either place would most likely work out for you.

As for taking a main road back to the Shannon area, you could do that from Killarney as well as from Cork.

Why not give another itinerary a try and see what you can come up with now?

Michele

P.S. I will put the Killarney "Special Offer" in a separate posting.

The offer at Loch Lein in Killarney sounds fabulous!  I've got it in my options now.  The question still remains if I want to do 2 nights in Killarney or Kenmare.  I am trying not to jump to a different hotel every night but give one location a 2 night stay if I can.  My options in that area that I have are:
Loch Lein, Killarney
Cahernane House Hotel, Killarney
The Fairview, Killarney
or
Tara Farm, Kenmare

I think I have the rest of my itinerary pretty much set from all the great suggestions I have received from you all!  I will post soon and fill you in on what I think we will try to accomplish.

Michele,Thanks for Deros tour web site – I could not find an email address on that site to contact them, so will probably have to call them.

Now, the Loch Lein offer sounds great….I a so torn, should I keep my Kenmare reservation, or stay in Killarney for the 3 nights?  Is it better to stay in Kenmare and track back to Killarney for the Gap of Dunloe? Or stay in Killarney and drive to explore Beara?  From there we would go to Cashel.

Once again I say, "Thank You" for all of your great help planning this trip.  I went from almost booking our flight into Dublin and out of Shannon and trying to conquer half of Ireland in 6 nights, to a much more enjoyable paced trip that I know we will truly enjoy.

Here is where I am at right now with the itinerary and please feel free to let me know what you think.  It's still a work in progress.

Day 1:
Land in Shannon at 8:00 am and pick up rental car.
Head North for lunch and the Burren.
Over to the Cliffs of Moher, maybe a short cruise out of Doolin to see the Cliffs from the water???  Has anyone been on this?
Check into hotel for 1 night (choices are Daly's House, Moy House, Moher Lodge) and maybe dinner at Gus O'Connor's.

Day 2:
Head South to Dingle via the Tarbert Ferry Boat.
Spend day touring the Peninsula and maybe Horseback Riding?
Check into Dingle hotel for 1 night (maybe Brambury's Guesthouse).

Day 3:
Drive to Killarney.
I'm not sure if we will choose to spend 1, 2, or 3 nights in this area yet.
We will stay in Killarney or Kenmare (choices are Loch Lein, Cahernane House, The Fairview, or Tara Farm in Kenmare).
Tour this region.

Day 4:
Still in this area.

Day 5:
Still in this area maybe or over to the Cork region for 1 night.

Day 6:
Drive North to Bunratty.
Check into Hotel (maybe Bunratty Meadows B&B).
Dinner at the Corn Barn in Bunratty Folk Park.

Day 7:
Fly out of Shannon at 9:00 am.

How am I doing so far?

Dayna,

I think your itinerary is starting to shape up. If you don't have to kiss the Blarney stone and can skip Cork, think about either two nights in Dingle and two in Killarney or Kenmare or three nights in either Killarney or Kenmare. You won't regret it.

On your first day you might be best off in Doolin. You can get a late afternoon boat cruise of the cliffs and then eat at Gus O'Connor's. If you are into gourmet dining Cullinan's is excellent and also has lovely B&B rooms.

There are many great places to stay in Dingle. Heaton's is one of my favorites. Some others that I recommend are Tower View, Emlagh House, Emlagh Lodge, Dunlavin. And of course The Shores on the north shore of the Dingle Peninsula.

In Killarney, do note that Fairview is right in town and only has parking for a couple of cars. Others must use the public parking lot. It is a nice guesthouse.

In Bunratty I really like Headley Court and Bunratty Lodge. If you book into either B&B they will make your reservations for Bunratty Irish Night in the corn barn for you if you ask. One less thing for you to do!

Take a look at my "Lodgings" page for other places to stay.

Tell me more about what you want to do from either Killarney or Kenmare and I will try to help with your decision.

Michele

xyz99,

Dero's has an email form: http://www.derostours.com/emailform.html

It is a tough decision about Killarney and Kenmare. Any way you look at it some backtracking will happen. The two places are about 45 - 60 minutes apart so you are best off deciding on one and staying put. Since you have the early morning Gap of Dunloe start maybe Killarney has a slight edge in the contest.

Thank you again for all of the excellent input.  I will check out Michele's lodging page for options.

Michele, it's tough to say what I want to accomplish in the Kerry / Dingle area.  I need to really read up on the area more.  I've always wanted to ride a horse on the beach, so maybe someone can suggest a location for that wish.  As for the rest, we just want to take in as much of God's beautiful Irish countryside as we can.  Beautiful scenery by day and excellent food, great pubs, and Irish music by night.

Dayna,

You can go horseback riding on the beach in Dingle. I think you should do two nights there and fulfill your dream. Then spend two nights in either Killarney or Kenmare. Read up a bit and then decide.

I know I want to pre-book our stay for the first night and the last night we are there.  I'm just torn about how the middle part will play out in Dingle, Killarney, Kenmare.  Do you think I can get away with not booking rooms for the middle of the trip and go with your list in hand and play it by ear?  We are there from May 8th - 14th.  I just don't want to get there and spend too much time looking for accomodations, but knowing my husband, he'll want to wing it a bit.

Dayna,

Generally in May you are okay winging it and you are avoiding the Bank Holiday. If you have your heart set on a special stay you should call them as soon as you know when you will be there. Make a list of a few B&Bs in each area and if one is full go on to the next one. Phoning them will cut down on the "looking around" stage. If you are going to be in a very popular place over a weekend (Fri & Sat) like Dingle try to book something. May is getting busier all the time. I guess word is out about my favorite month in Ireland!
