This is a great website--so glad I found it. We have ordered your new book and are looking forward to our first trip Ireland.
I booked my airfare this week. I had enough miles for 1 AA FF and purchased the second ticket for $700 inc. tax. I think that's a pretty good fare from Cleveland. We will be flying in and out of Shannon.
My husband and I will be travelling with our BIL & SIL. He is planning on playing some famous golf courses and is interested in gourmet dining. He has requested that we visit Kinsale. The rest of us want to hike, enjoy the scenery, visit some pubs, hear some Irish music. My husband would like to golf but he is happy at any golf course--he and my BIL are researching this.
Our tentative itinerary: Sun. 9/2 BIL & SIL arrive--stay at the Shores in Castlegregory
Mon. 9/3 We arrive--meet at the Shores. They do have availability--I was just going to reserve our rooms but notice that their site is not secure--I don't want to send my credit card info on the site. I guess I will call. How do you make reservations at B&B's?
Tues. Wed 9/4-9/5 Stay in Dingle. I thought we might want to stay in town even though the Shores is so close--walk to pubs & restaurants, hike. What do you think?
Thurs. Fri Sat. 9/6-8 Kenmare
Sun. Mon. 9/9 9/10 Kinsale
Tues. 9/11 Stay by the airport 10:15 am flight home on 9/12
The Shores is the only place I have reserved and as I research I am finding some great places to stay but appreciate any suggestions. We would like to stay under 100Euros/couple and as I look at rates, that seems doable.
My husband and I are hikers so we are trying to have less driving/more hiking on this trip. Suggestions for hikes with views are appreciated.
Welcome to my forum and thanks for ordering my book. It will probably be near the end of March when it will be mailed. I will let everyone on the forum know the moment it is ready. I will also email everyone who has pre-ordered to let them know their book is in the mail.
The Shores is a wonderful B&B and you will enjoy a stay there. Be sure to book dinner on 9/3 as it is a gastronomic event to remember. For your other two days in Dingle you may want to move to another B&B closer to Dingle town. The Shores is on the north shore of the peninsula and not the ideal location if you want to partake of pub crawls, etc. in Dingle town. Assuming you want to be within walking distance of town I suggest Emlagh Lodge, Tower View, Dunlavin House and Fiuise. All are within your budget. For a splurge try Heaton's.
In Kenmare I recommend Driftwood, The Lodge and Abbey Court.
For Kinsale: Woodlands, Landfall House, Kilcaw House and if you want to be right near town Pier House.
Near the airport try Bunratty Lodge or Headley Court.
Most of these are linked on my "Lodgings" page.
There is plenty of hiking in Dingle including the Dingle Way, Mount Brandon, and the 12-mile long beach at Castlegregory. http://www.dingleway.net/ You can also hike along the harbor in Dingle town from the Skellig Hotel.
On the other side of the harbor from Kinsale up behind the Dock Pub is Charles Fort, which makes for good hiking. I also suggest checking with the tourist office in each town because they will have suggestions and may have maps for your hiking.
