My husband & I are leaving Saturday (3/10) for our first trip to Ireland. Our itinerary looks like this: Sunday night in Wexford, Monday & Tuesday Nights in Cork, Wednesday night in Kilkenny, Thursday & Friday nights in Dublin. Michelle's book has been invaluable; I was wondering if anyone else had suggestions for don't miss/don't bother sights in those areas. Thanks!
First time to Ireland -- how wonderful, and I'm sure you will enjoy it a great deal. The only comment I make regarding your schedule -- and I say this as a personal statement, knowing no two people are the same -- is that you are perhaps missing out on the "real" Ireland with where you are staying. I find the small towns and some of the heritage sites the real tie to going to this beautiful country. I would be concerned if you are driving yourself that too much time spent in cities like Cork or Dublin would find you frustrated with getting around. Now if what you posted is part of a tour, then certainly this does not apply.
I find towns such as Bantry, Dingle, Cong, etc. enjoyable as the pace is slow and you can get to know the locals much better. Dublin, while exciting and dynamic, will be a zoo around St. Patrick's Day, but perhaps that is what you are looking for.
No matter what you do, have great fun and don't try to force too much into this first trip. That might get frustrating -- Ireland is meant to see in small doses, as you will want to go back again real soon.
Your itinerary is doable. You may want to consider staying in Kinsale (just south of Cork City). It is a cute little town. Since your last night in Dublin is just before St. Patrick's Day be sure you have firm reservations. Your quick trip will give you a tiny taste of what Ireland has to offer. Perhaps you will get to return again for more some day!
