I feel stupid posting this, but I figure better safe than sorry. Will items that run off a car cigarette lighter in the US work in Ireland? My husband has a GPS which runs off the cigarette lighter.I know voltage in homes is different, but I assume a car battery is a car battery, no matter what country you are in. With my luck though, that is not the case and I would end up frying his unit!
Carrie, I asked the same question some time back and received the answer that, indeed, a car battery is a car battery no matter what side the driver sits on! So you'll be just fine with the item from the States. I got a charger for my digital camera which works off the 12-volt battery, just for our trip.
Dude is correct. And remember, there is no such thing as a "stupid" posting. All questions are equally important. If you need to know don't hesitate to ask.
Heck, yeah! If we all knew the answers, we wouldn't need Michele, or the forum! Just like Many Hands Make Light Work, Many Brains (and Experiences) Make a Better Trip to Ireland!
As my departure date nears, be prepared for some doozies!
Just in case you haven't attended to this detail, you'll need to make sure your GPS is loaded with the Ireland maps...most purchased in North America come loaded with only the US and Canada maps.
Our car's charger did not work. I brought my ipod and was hoping to run it through the lighter...but no power. I'm guessing this is not the norm, but possible.
Seriously, I have a car charger that I took and used successfully in Engalnd, and then UNsuccessfully in Ireland. The problem was wierd - the socket in the car was just a bit too large for the charger, so no good connection could be made. If I sat and held it in, it would charge - but it's very difficult to do that while driving!
Bring a backup source if you can, like something to plug into a wall.

My Belkin charger for my IPOD came with an extra sleeve that could be added on fir larger sockets. Although all the lighter sockets are 12V, there are some variences between car makers on the hole size.
Thanks for your input. Maybe that duct tape is not a bad idea after all! It would serve the same purpose as the sleeve that came with your Ipod. I wonder how many people get a sleeve and don't know what it is and toss it?
