Money and ATMs

Michele,I have a couple of questions related to ATM’s and money in Ireland:

1)
Here in US, all ATMs dispense money in bills of $20 – is it similar in Ireland (to get money in small bills)?  I would not want to get stuck with a 100 euro bill…

2)
On a different board someone mentioned that not all bank cards work in Ireland – that only the ones that still carry the bank assigned original PIN number are accepted.  For all our bank cards we changed the PIN number, to a number easier for us to remember.  Does this mean we will have a problem in Ireland?  Any idea on what the solution is?

Thanks a lot

xyz99,

I saw those post on Fodor's you are talking about, the ATMs only taking the bank assigned #. I've used my debit cards in Ireland for the last 4 trips the last one 2005 and I always use my debit cards with the #'s changed. In fact, I don't have any debit cards with the assigned #. I don't want to steer you wrong, as I said it's been 2005 since I was in Irealnd. That last trip, I went to ATM's every other day as I was paying in cash as much as I could. I don't how we could find out if this (changing #'s is true). HELP, Michele!

Regards, Joan(yaya)

xyz99,

The ATMs in Ireland I have used usually dispense 20s and lower. I have never had a problem with my cards and I have changed the numbers. I suppose anything is possible. That's why I take my card and my husbands as well as back up traveler's checks in case of emergency. It always pays to have a Plan B.

Ok, so between my husband and I we will have 3 different debit cards and 3-4 credit cards....I think we'll be fine.

Good to know about the small bills - we were recently in Anguilla, and their ATMs offer you a choice between American $ or Caribbean currency.  We asked for $100 American, and got one bill of $100 - we then got another $80 (small bills this time).

Thanks
