Hi Michele, I would like to know if you or your readers have ever stayed at one or more of these 3 castles? These are they only ones I have found that we can afford, but now we are a little worried they might not be very nice since we can't find them in any of the travel books. We are 4 women traveling on our own, we like an adventure but we want to be safe and secure, and no bed bugs. Blackwater Castle, Townshend Castle , Carrigeen Castle. Thank you, Eva
We stayed at Carrigeen back in April of 2001. It was a nice enough place and if I were to wish to stay in that area again, I would probably stay there again. The proprietess, Peig Butler is NOT your typical, 'warm and fuzzy', Irish B&B host and there have been LOTS of comments Pro AND Con, about Carrigeen, mostly concerning the lady of the house. That being said, we found that she ran an efficient, clean and comfortable house. The building itself is QUITE interesting and very 'CASTLE LOOKING'. In truth in fact, it was actually an old jail.
We drove by Castle Townsend while heading from Sheep's Head to Clonakilty this past April (2006), but didn't go in. Terrific setting, but a bit out of the way, unless you are planning to be in the area anyway.
Dunno if they are even still in business, but in 1999, we stayed at Cregg Castle, in Corrandoula, just outside of Galway. It's actually an old, fortified Manor House, but we really enjoyed our stay there.
