Easter Trip

Thanks for your wonderful site. I have been reading along for a few months and now will finally ask a question.
We will be travelling to Ireland 4/7-4/15 for a birthday celebration with our extended family ( 7 people -ages 4 to 84, 2 children). We arrive and depart Shannon. We will spend Easter weekend in Ballybunion at a family friend's B and B and have a reservation on our last night at Bunratty Lodge. We plan to see the Castle/folkpark and attend the dinner there on that last day.
The rest of the trip is free form. We'd like to enjoy Irish culture and music, celebrate some birthdays and find activities that children, parents and grandparents might enjoy.
We are planning on staying just in the southwest corner to limit van time(we're afraid we may get on each others nerves!). Some of the things we are considering seeing are- Ross Castle, Innisfallen Island(Lough Leane), and Muckross Traditional farms( though I've read they may not be open except weekends -and we will be in Ballybunion on our weekend) in Killarney.
Our 8 yr old loves caves , so we are condiering a visit to Crag cave.
We hope to spend a day either seeing the Dingle Dolphin or perhaps the seals near Kenmare. Maybe a trip down to Waterville.
I read a posting on this site for a Kellys Pub in Cooraclare (Kilrush)that had music on Wed nights and wondered if anyone knew if this would be Ok for children ( the posting stated multigenerational). Out entire clan loves music. Also I wasn't sure if Cooraclare's location and if it would be convenient , or too far east or southeast.
The Rock of Cashel is also on the list. We are skipping Blarney Castle, Cork and areas east due to the varied ages of our crew and the fact that a few of us have been to these before, though not for many years.
Any comments or ideas you have would be welcome.
Thanks

Sara,

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you have finally posted after gathering info for your trip. From what you have posted I will assume that you have either 4 or 5 days to work with after Ballybunnion and before you have to be in Bunratty. Because of what you want to see and do, I suggest skipping Kilrush this time. You will be much happier either splitting your time between Dingle and Killarney or just deciding to settle in Killarney and do day trips from there. There is a lot for all generations in Killarney. If you stay within walking distance of those towns it gives you options to split up and do things on your own at times.

The Rock of Cashel is a bit off your chosen route. Perhaps you should save that for another trip and be happy with seeing Ross & Bunratty castles instead.

The trip sounds like fun. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele

Perfect- thank you. That is just what I needed to know - where and how to organize those days.
You are correct 5 days, 4 nights to play with
Do you have any suggestions as to places in Killarney or Dingle to see/hear good traditional music? Also any suggestions in those areas for a site for a birthday dinner on Wednesday evening?

It's likely you'll be able to find traditional music in several towns in the SW...and the traditional music and pub scene is generally multi-generational (except after 9 when the kids are supposed to go home). Regardless, when your van pulls up, every place you go will automatically be multigenerational

Great job on limiting the area covered...family bonding in the car tends to only go so far. Sounds like a very fun trip. Stopping in the tourist office and asking the locals may help you find some family events that are going on that you might miss just searching the internet and books.

Have fun.

Sara,

For music check the following: http://www.irishmusicbars.com/ Do check in at the tourist office in each town as they will have lots of good advice for you.

What sort of a restaurant are you looking for? Most good restaurants in Ireland tend to be expensive unless you can avail of an "early bird dinner".

Choose your accommodations carefully for walkability to the towns.

Ah- its true we will make all places we visit multigenerational! Very good!
I appreciate the tip on the lodgings.
As far as the restaurant... nothing fancy necessary.. we will have few dress clothes. Someplace with a broader selection of food to accomodate kids , Seafood is usually good for our crowd as well. It would be the one night we'd probably be willing to spend a little more. Our local paper had an article recommending the Cooperage in Killarney and Bella Bia in Tralee. Any thoughts on those?

Sara,

There is a really good seafood restaurant in Killarney called Gaby's. But it is quite expensive. The gang might enjoy Bricin: www.bricin.com Restaurants that are usually good are The Flesk, Foley's, Robertino's (Italian). Kate Kearney's Cottage (several miles from town) does dinners as well as entertainment:  http://www.katekearneyscottage.com/

I suggest making reservations when you arive in Killarney.
