All the larger towns should have computer shops and internet cafes that will burn your pix onto CD for a few Euro. Unless you can't live without your laptop, I wouldn't think it would be worth it to bring along, particularly with the more restrictive weight an carry-on restrictions.

There is an internet cafe in Dublin on Grafton Street (and probably MANY others). In Killarney, we use the one that's just a few doors up from the Tourist Office, but I recall seeing at least one more in town as well. Can't give you other SPECIFIC locations, but I remember walking past one one in Mallow. The Tourist Office should be able to point you to the nearest one.

I also BELIEVE (but am not absolutely certain) that most camera shops will also transfer data to disk for you.

A possibly useless reminder, given that I don't know your technical expertise level, but be sure to set your camera to record pix at the HIGHEST possible resolution. It WILL 'eat' a lot more memory space per picture, but it may save a lot of of otherwise blah photos, by permitting you the ability to blow up and crop. Spare memory cards have gotten pretty cheap, too. I just bought a couple of 1 GIG SD's for under $20 a piece. Cameras are like life -- you can't have TOO MUCH MEMORY.....

Thanks Bob. Actually, I'm not a total techno nerd (that would be my nephew), but I am close. We do have six or eight memory cards, and totally understand the high resolution factor (I have taken photos for publication and websites for years). I was thinking of getting a few more cards in the next week or so (watching the ads for good sale prices).

I have a friend at work who has been traveling quite a bit in the last six months (her boyfriend is a private pilot taking a famous actor and his family on a one year 'round the world tour) and she had a card go bad on her so she lost a good many of her Paris pics. Her suggestion was to burn them to CD as a backup as soon as the card is filled.

One year my son took his computer with him and was sorry. The next trip he took plenty of memory cards and when he thought he needed another, he bought one in Dingle town. I don't know why he didn't go into any of the shops to have them downloaded to DVD's.

Definitely skip the laptop...it's extra luggage to lug around and it's not worth risking it getting damaged or stolen.

Camera shops can definitely put them on CDs, but a few in smaller towns send them out and have them back in 24 hours...bigger towns will do it in a flash. Computer shops are an easy answer...bring several blank cd's, a portable harddrive or upload your photos via the internet to a service like flickr.com, kodak, snapfish and others from any computer while you're on the road. The latter is actually extremely easy if you have a fast internet connection.

Sorry it took so long to answer your question about the computer. The computer was a 2001 1-mac book thing and he got tired of carrying it and also worried about leaving it in his room. He just told me if he had a smaller one now, he wouldn't mind taking one. He did fine without one.

Great info from everyone. There is no problem in Ireland getting photos put onto a CD or DVD. You can do it at Internet shops and at various pharmacys (chemists) everywhere. Since you don't need the laptop for anything else, leave it home.
