Keith would like to purchase an authentic Shillelagh while we are in Ireland. Has anyone ever tried to carry one on the plane? I'm not as concerned about the flight from Shannon to Chicago as I am about the flight from Chicago to Albuquerque.
We brought one back in 2003, without incident. My brother-in-law asked us to pick one up for him to give to a retiring co-worker. FYI: What we bought was a BLACKTHORN Walking Stick, which is not a TRUE Shillelagh. A TRUE Shillelagh is made of oak from a specific FOREST named Shillelagh in Co Wicklow.
I always have a walking stick or cane with me and have never had a problem. The walking stick I bought in a store in Milltown Malbay. It was not a tourist shop.
I use a blackthorn walking stick on a daily basis. The only time I have ever been hassled was at Logan aiport. In most cases, the security screeners will simply assist you through, run your walking stick through x-ray and then hand it back to you on the other side. I purchased mine on Inis Mor at a small shop which has since closed.
Thanks for all the info. I figured what he really wants is one of the blackthorn walking sticks, but he loves the thought of buying a Shillelagh in Shillelagh!
Bit - Have you traveled with your walking stick while traveling in the US (unrelated to Ireland trips)? We fly into O'Hare in Chicago on 5/4, but we aren't returning to Albuquerque until 5/6. We will be flying on Southwest from Midway airport to Albuquerque and weren't sure how they might react to it.
Yes, it goes where I go. I fly Southwest almost exclusively in the states and have never had an issue. They always x-ray it though, which amuses me. They usually fuss more over the knee brace than the blackthorn.
Hi Wendy! We're from Albuquerque too, but it looks like you're beating us there this year. We won't leave until end of May. :)
I can't tell you about carrying on a Shillelagh, but my daughter's friend insisted on taking a sword to Ireland last year to do some kind of sword dance. We thought he was crazy to try and take a weapon (he *did* check it instead of trying to carry it on), but he had absolutely no problem--here in Albuquerque or anywhere else. He just got a long tube to pack it in and checked it that way.
So I don't know how relevant this is since it was checking a sword--not carrying on a shillelagh, but I just had to say "Hi" since I'm a fellow ABQ lover of Ireland!

P.S. It sounds like you'll be back in time for the RGV Celtic Festival on Saturday, May 19th at the Balloon Fiesta Park. We'll be on the Main Stage at 1pm so come on down for a great day of Irish and Scottish festivities!
Hey Wendy and Bit, We'd love to meet you there! It's a 'Celtic' Festival, so there are lots of Scottish Pipe bands and Highland games, but the Irish American Society makes sure that Ireland is well represented as well. Lots of music, food, vendors, Irish Wolfhounds, etc. As I said, my band, "The Next Chapter," will be on the main stage at 1pm, but a group I direct "The Apple Mountain Harp Kids" (about 20 kids who play Celtic Harps, fiddles, bodhran, etc.) will be playing in the Apple Mountain Music Tent at 11am so you might want to stop by and see this amazing bunch of kids, too. I'm pretty proud of them! The Irish American Society has a dinner on Friday night and I believe they're trying to put together a Ceili for Saturday night.
Stop by and say Hi if you come by. Wendy, you can fill me in on all the details of your trip. We'll be leaving for Ireland a week after the festival so it will be good practice for us before we head over there!
I don't forsee any problems with the shillelagh. It looks like everyone has arranged a meet up while I was busy doing my taxes! If you do, have fun at the Celtic festival.
My son bought a shillelagh for a friend of his (his friend is a wwf fan and there is a wrestler who uses one in his act).He packed it in his checked bag.
You should of seen the look from security when we were asked if we had any weapons and we said yes.
