Two drivers

As I am pricing car rentals, it is noted that there may be a charge for the second driver but it is not noted.  We are renting at Shannon.  Does anyone know the charge?  I was looking at the Nissan Micra and Toyota Corolla automatics.  There is only the 2 of us so I think the Micra is big enough.  I notice it is also available using diesel fuel.  Has anyone chosen that option?

We rented a car through Dan Dooley's last month in Shannon Airport, had two drivers, and I think the extra charge for another driver was about $8 per day extra.  Well worth it, in my opinion, as it is wonderful to take a break from the chore of driving over there now and then.  Splitting it up was a great thing for our group.

Thank you for your post. I went to Dooleys website and entered 1 driver and then 1 additional driver and the cost was the same.
I tried the old fashioned way of getting information with Kemwel. I called 877-820-0668 and asked them the charge for an additional driver at Shannon and they told me that it was $10/day. On their website, Kemwel is offering a free cell phone(shipping & other charges about $40) for reservations that are paid for by April 30th--you need to note it on your reservation. Additional days were $2/day???

The Dooley 800# is what I used, and the people there were easy to deal with -- quite nice, actually.  You might call them and see what they say if you haven't booked yet.  I read great things about Dooley ahead of time and was really happy with their service.biggrin

The number I called from the U.S. was 800-331-9301.

We have our rental scheduled with DAn Dooley's. Keith plans on doing all of the driving, but there is always the possibility of an emergency.

When I made the reservation the lady was really nice and suggested that we make the reservation for a single driver, and when we pick up the car to have them keep a copy of my license and tell them if there is an emergency we will call them and have them add me on as a driver.

We will be picking up our car on Monday, so we will be sure to let everyone know how this works once we return.

We have the diesel Micra reserved for our trip in July. Last year I drove an Opel Astra- a nice car but I'm looking forward to the smaller Nissan.

LindianOhio-
We had the Nissan Micra and found it to be just perfect for two.  We also had the automatic.  Only one driver- sorry I can't help there.   We did travel light, although had extra bags on the way back and still had enough room.  Very good on gas too!  Have a great trip!

Linda,

I always try to get a diesel, as I find the mileage to be better. Have a most excellent trip. I look forward to reading your trip report upon your return!

Linda,

There is always a charge for another driver. What it costs per day differs among car rental companies. But in general it is from 8-12 euro per day.

Generally "free" cell phones from renatl agencies are great deals because the per minute charges tend to be pretty high though they probably make enough money on the shipping alone. There are certainly less expensive ways to make calls. Some people swear that only an insane person would venture out into the world without a cell phone. I purchases (long ago) a cell phone that I use overseas. They cost about $50 and I purchase a SIM while I'm there which usually comes with as much call credit as the card costs. In general though, calling cards are cheaper. There are also some call back services which make calling overseas much cheaper.
