Good B&B on Inis Mor, Aran Islands

Can anyone recommend a B&B for next month on Inis Mor?  Ideally with a great view and in a traditional cottage run by an islander.

RE: Good B&B on Inis Mor, Aran Islands

There are several wonderful B&Bs on Inis Mor and all will be run by islanders. However, I always stay at Man of Aran Cottages, whihc is run by Joe & Maura Wolfe. Maura is a Native of the Island and a most fabulous chef, having cooked for the Royal family. Joe takes great pride in his gardens and produces most of the vegetables you will eat. It is a delightful cottage set in its own garden along the coast near the ring fort of Dun Aengus. It is removed from teh port town of Kilronan but there is a van which wil drive you in as needed. If you don't want to be as far out, then you could try a number of B&Bs in Kilronan: An Crugan , Killmurvey House, Kelly's House (stiofankelly@eircom.net).

I would recommend taking a pony cart to tour the island or renting a bicycle. I think that either is preferrable to the van tours. Take the time to visit the Black Fort, as well as Dun Aengus. Also, make time to visit the Seven Churches site, as it is quite impressive.

That should get you started at least. You should look to making your reservations soon, as they start to fill up in May quite quickly.

Enjoy your time on Inis Mor and should you stay at Man of ARan, please give my regards to Joe & Maura,

Slan Beo,

Bit Devine

I've stayed at An Crugan and it was comfortable, though nothing spectacular. I wouldn't have a problem staying there again. There views are nice and we took a great morning walk down to the coast from there. It's a moderate walk into town, less than a mile I would say.

Thank you both for the recommendations.  Since the weather is a factor (the ferries may not run), what happens to our ferry and B&B reservations if weather prevents our arrival?

Bit,
We followed your cue and emailed the Man of Aran B&B.  Got a prompt and courteous reply advising the date was available.  We are supposed to mail a desposit (quoted in Euros) to hold the room.  We don't know anything about international transactions.  What kind of payment medium would you recommend from the US (personal check in dollars, traveller's check, cashiers check) that would be convenient for the proprietor?
Thanks again!
Cristy

One of my B&B hostesses asked for a cheque (her spelling) to hold our reservation, of 40. So I multiplied 40 x 1.3 and rounded it up to $60 and sent a personal check. She e-mailed and said that she received it and got 43 euros and 14 cents at the bank. That's an exchange rate of about 1.39. I don't know whether her bank charged anything for the conversion but if they did it wasn't much.

I mailed it from the window at the post office and it was either 84¢ or 87¢. It was mailed on April 13 and I heard from her today (24th) that she had already cashed it so it didn't take too long.

Hmmm. I see my euro sign didn't show up. That should be 40 euros in the first sentence.

Cristy,

I always mail them a personal cheque. I use a currency converter and then round up to the next highest. I am so glad you were able to get booked in there. I promise you will fall in love. Maybe, if you are lucky, you can get Maura to sing in Irish. It is an experience you will never forget! You must tell them when you arrive that I send them huge hugs. I worry about Joe's health constantly, as well. After four years of regularly lodging there, they have become like family. I shall miss them the most this summer, as I am not traveling over.

It does take a while for the check to make its way there. So I would email when you send it and then a few weeks later to verify that it was received.

Slan Beo,

Bit
