Me and my Boyfriend are planning to go to Ireland for a Holiday. I have been to Dublin 4 times in 2 years now, and want to see the rest of the country as well.
There is only one problem.. I do not have my drivers license, My boyfriend does, but he is not allowed to rent a car, as he has his drivers license less than a year. My question to you is: Do you recommend to book a trip and travel by bus? (I mean an organized trip) or do you think we should wait until we can rent a car?
Welcome to the forum. You can certainly see Ireland by Bus & Rail, traveling at your leisure. You could also look to a tour more designed for young folks such as Paddy Wagon Tours, a company which provides active tours at a fairly decent price, IMHO. I was the "elder stateswoman" of the Paddywagon tour I was on and yet I had the best time!
Let us know what you like to see and do. We can make better suggestions that way.
A bus trip is always an option. If you're more adventurous you could plan on a bus and rail trip and add guided day trips from some of the hubs like Dublin, Galway, Belfast or Killarney.
Let us know what you want to experience on your trip, and we'll give our 2 cents.
Day 1 Amsterdam --> Dublin Day 2 Dublin Day 3 Dublin Day 4 Dublin --> Galway Day 5 Galway (Daytour, the Burren & Cliffs of Moher) Day 6 Galway Day 7 Galway --> Castlebar Day 8 Castlebar Day 9 Castlebar --> Sligo Day 10 Sligo Day 11 Sligo --> Belfast Day 12 Belfast Day 13 Belfast Day 14 Belfast --> Amsterdam
We will travel on our own with the coached/trains (whatever ;) )
Is there anything in one of these cities which we shouldn't miss?
While in Galway, consider a daytrip (or overnite) to the Aran Islands. Rather than Castlebar, Westport has a lively music scene and is very picturesque.

I think if I were going to do Ireland by public transport I would base in cities that have good day trip options to other places. It also depends on the time of year you are traveling since day tours are more abundant May - Sept. Some good cities to base out of are Dublin, Killarney, Galway, Limerick, Belfast.
Also take a look at Vagabond Tours http://www.vagabond-ireland.com/ They provide something adventurous and off-the-beaten-track.
Hopefully you will return to Ireland many more times and will soon be able to drive yourselves around.
