In case you missed Matt Lauer's "Where in the World?" segment on the Today Show last week, you can catch his time in Ireland at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3041544/.
The Ireland visit was on Day 2. In case the link goes bad...just search the Today Show site for the clips.
I was not particlarly impressed with the fellow who did the travel tips. I'm not sure he has actually been to Ireland before ....
He stated emphatically that one should NOT rent a car. His words were "don't drive. You won't get in an accident, you'll cause one". The trains will take you to Galway, Belfast, Cork and Limerick. Apparently those are the only places to go in Ireland. No mention that you would then have to catch a bus to the more famous locations in Ireland.
The lodging discussion was interesting. The link on the website says "Traveling on a budget" No mention of B&Bs. He started out by saying that staying at a castle was a nice idea. Clearly there is nothing budget-like in staying at most castles. He then went on to compare Ballyhannon Castle, which is self catering and you get the WHOLE castle to Ashford Castle, stating that ashford castle was a much better deal because it was cheaper ... apples to oranges. He also stated that rooms are about $250. Well, the cheapest room may go for about that in February. Currently, rooms in June start at E430.
He mentioned you could get a room at the Temple Bar Hotel in Dublin for $81 a night. Expedia lists the price in early June at $165. I checked a few other sites and the price was about the same. The hotels website had it the cheapest price at E120, but the difference w/ conversion was only a few dollars.
Again, no mention of B&B or hostels. Stunning misinformation.
He suggests that you golf at Ballybunnion. Try to get there by train.
He also refered to the Power of the Pound which is why things are so expensive. Ummmmmmm, Ireland is on the Euro.
The views were nice but anyone planning a trip right away (and the focus was trips this summer based on his discussion of airline rates) is going to be disappointed when they really start checking it out.
Appreciate the heads up -- won't even think about wasting any time watching it now, as the things you note are irritating to me. Lodging on a budget is certainly tied to B&Bs and not hotels, euros instead of the pound is pretty basic information that was ignored, and my favorite:
Don't even think about renting a car in Ireland?
Might as well have said Don't even think about seeing the real Ireland. I'm sure the views were great, but they are wonderful in movies, vacation footage, and documentaries that tell a true story as well.
Now to catch that train to Ballybunnion, I must cut this short!
I agree, the travel tips segment was a huge disappointment ... I already sent NBC a note stating several of the points Bill made. I actually thought to myself "they could have gotten more useful travel information from one visit to IrelandYes than what they were putting out there."
Of the seven segments, the Traveling on a Budget is the one to miss.
