Just Back from Ireland: Cliffs of Moher

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I are just back from Ireland. We had some very good weather with lots of sunshine for most of the time. When we left yesterday morning it was in the cold rain. So the weather is changing yet again.

I was at the new Cliffs of Moher vistior's center and thought it was well done. The old center was too small for the number of people visiting the cliffs. The new one is mostly underground (with lots of skylights so you don't feel like you are in a cave). It has two cafes, one downstairs and one upstairs. Both are self-service but large enough to accommodate crowds. There are larger and more toilet facilities. There is a large gift shop and there is a tourist information desk.

Parking was 8 euro. Ouch! Personally, I think that is too much to charge. The parking for cars is now across the street from the cliffs but there is a crosswalk for pedestrians. I saw a golf cart taking some elderly people up to O'Brien's Tower on new graded gravel pathways. When I inquired at the info desk they said in the future they may have the service available for those who need it. It would be a struggle pushing a wheelchair uphill unless it were motorized.

You can now walk farther to the left and there is a new viewing platform there. Many people were jumping the wall and hiking out to Hag's Head although the signs discouraged it.

You must pay for admission (4 euro) to The Atlantic Edge interpretive center. Inside are interactive displays about the cliffs in the past, present and future. There is a film about the area (it can also be seen free from the second floor near the restaurant). One room has an a/v called The Ledge where you see the cliffs underwater and above. The film is shown on three sides and below you.

One thing that I noticed was missing were the buskers, muscians and folks selling various merchandise. I don't know if they will be allowed back but it always added a circus-like atomsphere to the cliffs.

For better or worse and no matter what you opinion, those visiting the Cliffs of Moher will now have a multi-million euro center to visit in addition to the natural wonder of the cliffs themselves.

Wow, thanks for the info! This new building sounds really nice! Intersting about hte underground part. Can't wait to see it! Now, I don't see myself going over the wall- heights get to me sometimes!!! I may be young, but not crazy!

Glad you have a good trip. We leave on Friday for two weeks and can hardly wait. You said that you had great weather. What was the temperature during those great, sunny days that you had. We're trying to decide what clothes to take, and will be packing lightly, so want to take the right things. I think other than that, we're ready...we've have great advise from you and the others on the forum. It has helped so much. Thank you!!!!

Thanks for the update. I'll be there next month and look forward to checking it out myself.

My understanding was that they wanted to keep the buskers but require them to get licenses from the county. If they're not their during high season, we'll know they were probably pushed out.

Hopefully, we shall be doing the Cliffs of Moher Boat trip, then back to land and to the Centre. We are anxious to see the new setup. I have "hung" over the Cliffs twice now, guess those days are over!

You brave woman! I have never hung over the edge but my husband has done it in younger days. I asked for the car keys in advance.

Dana,

The weather was approaching 80 on the sunny days, but that was inland in Kilkenny. On the coasts you get the breezes and it was cooler. My husband took a cold shower and put on his shorts. I never wear shorts so stuck to my usual wardrobe but with a short-sleeve blouse. When we left it was cold rain in the 50s.

Welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful time!

We're on our way at the end of the week and I'm so thankful to you (and everyone else) for the insight and help you've given us.

Looking forward to Murphy's on the 24th and meeting up with Helen, Marie and the rest of the gang. We'll try to get pics for the forum of a group "SLAINTE"!

PS - With your weather report, am I going to have to pack for northern climes as well as sub-tropical??? LOL

I did have a wonderful time. Thanks! For packing think "layering". You can add a jacket , fleece or sweater to a short-sleeve shirt for warmth or take it off if too warm. It is very hard to predict the Irish weather. It could be warm, cool, or anything in between. There are also plenty of jackets, sweaters, etc. for sale in Ireland if you need them.

Welcome back -- sounds like great weather.  I also thought the 8 euros for parking at the Cliffs was a bit high, considering it is a good, long walk to get the the visitors center, but once there I certainly enjoyed myself.
