Car rental

How far ahead does a person normally reserve a rental car? My party will need an automatic for early October. Can paying ahead avoid the thievery at the rental pick-up counter, or is it inevitable? A person hears horror stories about Ireland rentals, and it is so easy here in the USA.

WCOMALLEY,

I generally book about a month in advance if I have my dates by then. If you do your homework you can avoid the "thievery" at the car rental desk. Being informed, shopping around, reading the fine print and comparing the same car, insurance, etc. at each company will assure that you know what you are doing when you arrive. Look at my "Car Rental" page for more info you need to know. The latest "add on" is having to pay a surcharge for going into No. Ireland. They certainly know how to stick it to the tourists. Perhaps the Irish government should standardize the industry. They are having an election on May 24 so we shall see what happens.

If you need more info or have specific questions as you navigate the car rental maze, just post here and we will try to help.

Michele
