C.S. Lewis in Northern Ireland

Hi all,
Just two weeks and we're on our way! I'm a big C.S. Lewis fan and want to visit some sites in Northern Ireland related to the author (where he lived, studied, spots of inspiration for his writings Linnen Hall library, etc.). I've found some good information on the Northern Ireland and Belfast sites but was wondering if anyone here has any personal experience or recommendatons. I know this one is an off-the-wall question and so I might not get any responses, but thought I'd ask anyway!

Jeanne,

First off, I hope that the upcoming festival is a huge success. I won't be able to make it after all, as I am in the midst of moving. cry

As for C.S. Lewis, there is so much of Northern Ireland that inspired him. The Mourne mountains, the coastlines of CastleRock and Portrush, the Belfast Docks, they are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Here is a site which you might find interesting.

In Belfast alone, you can walk or drive past his Grandfather's house, Ty-lsa, on Parkgate Avenue, visit St Mark's Church to see the stained glass window donated by the Lewis Boys, check out the small CS Lewis exhibit at the Belmont Tower and checkout a sculpture at the Holywood Library. You can see the lamp-post that inspired the one in Narnia at Crawfordsburn Country Park, while Dunluce Castle on its rocky headland is said to have inspired Cair Paravel.

I hope that has answered a few of your questions and whetted your appetite!

Slan Beo,

Bit

Hi Bit,
Sorry you won't make it to the festival.

I have planned to visit the Mourne mountains, Castlerock, St Mark's, Dunluce Castle and I have visited that website you mentioned. As a matter of fact it was there that I saw mention of Leganonny Dolmen(sp?) in County Down. Do you know where that is? I'd love to visit this 'stone table.' I'm not sure what Ty-Isa on Parkgate AVenue is. Can you tell me more about it? What is the exhibit at Belmont Tower? Is the sculpture you are talking about the wardrobe? Thanks Bit! I knew you'd have some ideas for me!

Hey Jeanne,

Yes, that is the sculpture, it was designed and set for the one hundredth birthday celebration. Ty-lsa was the home of his paternal grandfater, Richard Lewis. There is also Little Lea, which I believe is also a private residence, where he grew up and started writing. Little Lea is on North Circular rd, I believe.  Also, Linen Hall Library is a wonderful place with a collection of books, donated by the C.S. Lewis Association of Ireland, consisting of books by and about C.S. Lewis.

As for the Legananny Dolmen, it is, if memory serves me, about 7 miles south of Dromara, on the slopes of Sleive Croob near the village of Leitrim, nestled between a stone wall and a back road. It isn't too hard to find and it is not restricted as far as access. Should I find my pictures of it, I will post them here.

I think you and I should go over in December, as they have a C.S. Lewis Festival in Belfast the first week of December every year! giggle.gif As for the exhibit, it is a chronicle of his life in artifacts and pictures. It was very interesting and only took a small amount of time.

CS Lewis was the reason that I went to Belfast in the first place on my 40th birthday adventure. My friend, who footed the bill for most of it, was quite the trooper but I could tell that my Narnia adventure was getting to her.

Slan Beo,

Bit

Oh Bit,
I would love to go to that festival! Now that you've told me about it I'm going to have to start planning. Can I afford to go to Ireland twice in one year? Or will I have to wait until 2008? Hmm....

I can see we are kindred spirits. :) I have always considered myself a Narnian who somehow ended up on the wrong side of the wardrobe door. I have (of course) read the chronicles many times and just completed them again a few months ago with a ladies book club that I host. We've also worked our way through A Grief Observed (why I need to go to Castlerock) and Screwtape Letters and I'm sure will tackle many other of his works in the coming months. I've read a lot of his books--but still have plenty more to delight myself with.

Thanks for all of the great tips. I'll start planning how to fit what I can in on this trip. I do want to visit Little Lea, and now I'll grab my map and look for Dromara and Leitrim.

P.S. Bit, as a musician, you'll be interested to know that I've written a song and recorded it on my second CD called "Voyage of the Dawn Treader." :)
It's the Narnian in me--I couldn't resist!

Jeanne,

It seems you are in safe hands with Bit's knowledge of C.S. Lewis and first-hand info about sites associated with him in No. Ireland. I am not really into Narnia, so you have found a kindred spirit in Bit.

You will have to let us know about your travels and how much you got to see related to C.S. Lewis.

Jeanne,

Where can I find the album? I would love to have a copy.

Michele,

The complete Chronicles was a gift to me on my seventh birthday. I reread them all each year in June, my birth month. This year will be my 36th revisit. I have also read his other works. He was a fascinating man and one has to be on one's toes when they are reading most of his works. I like a writer who keeps your brain engaged.

Slan Beo,

Bit
