5 days/4 nights for Urban family

hi Michele,
I'm so glad to have found you and your forum, as I could use some assistance. We are 3 generations of a family coming to Ireland mid August for the first time, for a mere 4 nights/5 days. Six people, ages 20-85.  (20 yr old is boy - so he needs stimulation!) We are from NYC and the surrounding area, all pretty seasoned travelers and not looking for a guided tour.  We love the idea of staying in luxe castles, but not if they are too remote. We do seek high-end accomodations, especially if they have something special to offer. We want to see and experience Ireland as best as we can and don't want to spend our precious time driving too far- unless the drive is part of the sightseeing or there are many stops along the way. And we are not more than occasional "pub crawlers" - we will certainly check out the pubs because its Ireland after all, but this is not an emphasis for us.

Can you suggest - 2 areas to spend 2 nights each, how best to get around, (are car services prohibitive? we are worried about driving ourselves on the "other side" of the road.!  Would it be Dublin and Galway??

Most appreciative of your help

Marla

Marla,

Welcome to the forum! Can you tell me if you have your airfares yet and where your entry and departure points will be? That will help me to better advise you on your trip.

Michele

thanks for the quick reply. I don't have air yet, but there seem to be good options in and out of Dublin - nonstop on Air Lingus

Marla,

If you are arriving and departing from Dublin you will not want to spend all your time getting to and from Galway. Instead, I suggest you stick closer to the east coast. You say you are from NYC so you might enjoy seeing a bit of the countryside. Co. Wicklow just south of Dublin might fit the bill. You can get there by bus or rail (see my Transport page for links). You will most likely have to stay in Dublin for at least one night prior to departure especially if you have an early flight. You could break it up with 2 nights in Wicklow and 2 in Dublin. That would give you just a tiny taste of what Ireland has to offer.

If you decide on Shannon, that is a whole 'nother story.
