Horsebackriding in Ireland?

I've seen many photos and advertisement for riding in Ireland, particularly along the beach and was wondering if any of you had done this during your travels if were you pleased? would you recommend the stable? and has anyone done this on the northwest coast?

suzinfla,

I have ridden a horse through the Gap of Dunloe but not on the beach. Actually, that was my first and last horseback ride! It didn't agree with me.

We would need to know a particular town or area before recommending a stable.

Hi Suzinfla,

I have ridden in Ireland a few times.  If you will be in Dingle, I rode with Dingle Stables. You can get the directions or phone number from the Tourist Office. If you are near Sligo, the Grange has horse rentals and you can ride on the beach.  They will do 3-day or longer Farmhouse stay rides where you get a map and ride each day to a farmhouse where they will feed the horse and you.  I definitely want to do that one day...when I can afford it.  Have trouble justifying spending that much money to ride someone else's horse when I don't ride my own!  LOL  But wherever you are, you can find out a stable near there at the local Tourist Office or look in the Golden Pages.  You can also see signs for pony trekking.  You will have a great time!!

We rode in Dingle and used Long's.  I was very pleased with them and with the horses.  Be advised that most places only take advanced riders to the beach, as the horses tend to want to gallop there from habit.  Have a great time!

If you are near Kilkenny, you might contact Eleanor Dwan at Mt. Juliet equestrian center. Beautiful grounds (river, not oean) and they supply hats and boots. The spa in a real nice convenience when you come to the end of the trail.

Enjoy oyr visit,
jb

suzinfla,

As you see, there are good places to horseback ride all over Ireland. When you know your itinerary let us know and we will let you know of the good stables.

Michele,

I ordered your book earlier today and continue to press on with a plan. Hopefully with your book in hand I will come up with an itinerary. I am finding many beautiful things to look forward to in Ulster, but would also like to travel down to Newgrange and possibly Galway. Horsebackriding though is likely to be in Donegal.

Thanks to all who have commented. I appreciate all of your advice.

Suzanne

The pictures of the horses on the beach are a dream to me. They have inspired me so much so that 3 weeks ago I began taking riding lessons at the age of 49. I like the sound of the two night package with 1/2 a day surfing and 1/2 a day trail. I will email them to see if will work for my family. (The surfing is strictly for the boys!)

Thanks again and again.
