Scattershots from a scatterbrain

Couple of questions have occurred to me:
1) Even though most if not all the B&Bs now have hairdryers in the rooms, we will be three women in one room for about half the nights of our trip. Would it behoove me to take along my lightweight travel dryer and leave it in the car when we are in two rooms?

2) Should we decide to spring for the GPS (and it's really sounding tempting), do we have to reserve a car with one installed (and how do we do this with Kemwel?) or do they just have a bunch of them in a closet and we plug one into the (I forget the PC term) cigarette lighter?

3)Okay, this makes it more than a couple of questions, but...I was thinking about asking my doc for a sample of Ambien or Lunesta but I think they last a good eight hours. The flight is about 6½ hours and of course I want to stay awake for that scrumptuous dinner, and as the driver I really need to be alert on arrival. What do the rest of you do? Tylenol PM? Benadryl? Dramamine used to put me to sleep but either I or the formulation have changed. I plan to use the Melatonin jet lag procedure but don't know if that will help me sleep on the plane. Suggestions?

Dude,

You have waaay to much time on your hands this weekend.

1. I assume you will have to take turns in the bathroom showering, etc. Can you time it so one person is doing that while the other (who has just finished) is using the hair dryer? Sounds like you will have to work out a schedule anyway. How long does it take each person to do their hair and will you do it every day? My husband has hardly any hair left so I don't have to worry about it!! wink

2. I have not done this yet. I suggest phoning Kemwel and asking them. The rental is usually through Europcar. They may have some input on it also.

3. Champagne! It puts me right out. By the time I get there the effects have worn off and there are no after effects (unless you drink too much). biggrin

Dude,

Why don't you try the over the counter drugs before you go and see if they help you sleep. You can get two kinds of dramamine. One is non-sleepy. I'd be afraid to take anything very strong as you are the driver. Let us know.

Visualizing my sisters' and my hair, we should be able to schedule this out...and I learned on our first trip out, after buying what the young man at RadioShack insisted was the right adapter, that contrary to what my mother always told me, you will NOT die of pneumonia if you go to bed with a wet head. At that point we were too ignorant to think of asking our hostess for the loan of a dryer. I just realized that we probably wouldn't want to run two dryers at the same time anyway.

I think I will phone Kemwel and get the skinny on the GPS. Not that I don't trust my sisters to navigate, but ...

But I don't like champagne (could just think of it as For Medicinal Purposes Only, like cough syrup). Since I'll be back in steerage, the chances of getting any, much less enough to make me sleepy, are pretty slim. Or can you buy it by the flute (tee hee) in economy class? Perhaps I'll check out the Dramamine and a couple other OTCs, or just ask my doctor what he does, as they go to Ireland frequently. His wife's name is Patty Murphy. They probably go Business Class, though, with the free champagne.

Stand by for answers.

Judy,
Tylenol PM works for me now when I absolutely have to sleep and can't get there. It doesn't leave me groggy the next day so I'm hoping that will work for me on the plane. However, my husband can't wakeup after taking one (I take the dosage of 2), so he won't be using it because he is the designated driver. As Joan said, try them out first.

Putting Tylenol PM on my shopping list. And I'll read the labels on some other stuff, too. I do have trouble sleeping in hotels/motels no matter how tired I get but I have never had trouble sleeping in strange beds in Ireland. I do plan to do the jet lag melatonin dosage thingy and I'll report back on that. But the sleepy drugs may affect that. Oh well.

Dude,

Be careful and give a trial run to things like Ambien or Lunesta. A friend of mine used something like that on a flight and suffered from a sort of amnesia. She was totally spaced out for a couple of days.

Thanks for the warning, Michele. Since I'm to be the only driver we can't let that happen. Plus I'm putting too much money and heart into this trip to miss out on a minute of it. Looking at their ads it seems that they both work for 8 full hours which would not be what I want. Probably something OTC will work better.

Judy:

Simply Sleep might do better than Tylenol PM.  If you are not in pain, you do not need the Tylenol part of the drug.  You do not need a Rx for it.
