I have been working hard on theitinerary for my group of librarians. A few of you may remember that we are planning on attending the Ennis Book Club Festival, February 29-March 2, 2008.
Your book Michele, has been very helpful. Thank you.
We arrive on February 28th and spend 4 night in Ennis at the Old Ground Hotel, move onto 4 nights in Ballyvaughan at the Drumcreehy Country House, where we will explore the Burren, Cliffs of Moher, and Galway. I was wondering about the Aran Islands in early March. Does a trip over to them sound like fun that time of year? Or should I find something inland to do?
Finally we will be spending 2 nights at the Bunratty Castle Hotel before we leave on March 9th. I will get reservations for a banquet and the Corn Barn if possible. I am also planning a visit to King John's Castle and Limerick.
I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an interesting attraction and lunch somewhere between Shannon Airport and Ennis on our first day? Everyone will be excited to experience something but they will also be tired. I was thinking about possibly stopping at Dromoland. The Craggaunowen doesn't open until mid-April.
The weather is probably going to be rainy and cool. I am hoping to find some indoor attractions. If anyone has any suggestions, for that time of year, I would certainly appreicate it.
What time do you arrive in Shannon? That might determine where you will stop on your way to Ennis. If you plan on stopping at Dromoland Castle Hotel with a group you may want to contact the manager in advance. Were you thinking of having breakfast there?
Libraians from all over the states sign up for our literary tours. I would ask that everyone arrive at Shannon in the morning. By the time we finish with airport business and get on the bus we will need some lunch. Perhaps we should look for breakfast in the airport first.
Dromoland seemed to be on the way to Ennis. I would check with the management first to see they could accomodate the group. It looks like they have both a casual Country Club and a Fig Tree restaurant which are open for lunch. Have you tried either one?
I will be traveling to Ireland in October to finish up my research and check on the hotels, attractions and restaurants. However, the basic schedule needs to set by the end of July. There will be a fair amount wiggle room for spontaneity and moments of serendipity.
Thank you Michele. I did email Joan at "Access" about a coach bus and mentioned your name.
For lunch nearby Shannon Airport I would recommend the cafe at Bunratty Village Mills. It is self-service and caters for groups. The food is good and there is a large selection from soups, sandwiches, full lunches to snacks. You can contact them through the Bunratty Castle Hotel. I have not eaten at Dromoland Castle.
If you want something special for lunch contact The Red Door Restaurant in Bunratty. I will give you the phone number if you want. If your group is large enough they may open for you and put on a special lunch. It is wonderful food.
Time of year means that many things are not yet open. Check to see if Knappogue Castle is open. It doesn't take too long to see the public rooms and gardens. Once in Ennis you could stop by the Riches of Clare Museum for an orientation to the area. There is a tourist office there too.
If some of your librarians are coming from the west coast it is possible their flights may arrive in the afternoon. You should put something in the terms about it being their responsibility to find theilr own transport to Ennis if they arrive after a certain time.
I hope Joan comes up with a good quote for you. My clients have been very happy with their service, vehicles and drivers.
The Bunratty Traditional Irish Night in the Corn Barn will most likely not be open in March. Try for Bunratty Castle Banquet instead.
The Aran Islands can be good in March. It just depends on the weather. You can get some fine days then. Check into both the ferries and Aer Aran flights to the islands.
