Looking for suggestions! My husband and I are taking our 2nd trip to Ireland. This time bringing our 2 kids (11 & 12). Lucky for us, we have cousins in Galway and so will be able to spend the final week with them doing day trips to the Cliffs, Aran Islands, Connemara and Cavan. We arrive in Dublin Aug 13th and plan to spend 2 nights there. Any ideas how to spend the next 4 or 5 days/nights? We depart from Shannon on the 24th. I don't want to bore the kids with too much driving, but want to make the most of this trip! Would appreciate any tried and true tips during what I hear is the most crowded time in the Emerald Isle!
Maureen, pull up my thread entitled "Since we're fantasizing..." and see what you think. You could modify that to suit your time and interests. I'll bet the boys would love the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and the Marble Arch Caves. Then head on to Galway instead of back to Dublin.
I think we would take Michele's advice and modify the original plan to include Carrickfergus Castle on the way north.
Thanks for the tips...however, I was thinking to balance out the northern culture of the northwest, maybe we should do some of the southwest or southeast? My family is in Limerick and I will probably spend 1/2 day visiting there on the way to Galway. My husband's family is outside Galway and we have hosted them here in the states several times so they are graciously returning the favor. That is why we are spending so much of the trip up there. Any suggestions as to preferring the South west or South east? Bunratty and Blarney? My brother is pushing Cobh...We have done the Ring of Kerry and personnally, I think the kids will be bored with all the driving/scenery for 3 hours. Looking for something a little bolder perhaps,....
Cahir Castle and the Rock of Cashel come to mind. Perhaps Liam & Corey's walking tour of Kilkenny. They might enjoy taking the cable car across the Atlantic at Dursey Island. Bunratty Folk Park and Castle are obvious choices, along with Craggaunowen. The kids might like kissing the Blarney Stone; most adults I know would rather skip it although the grounds are just lovely in the Spring. Would the kids enjoy glass blowing? My grandsons, a bit older, have expressed an interest. Kerry the Kingdom in Tralee might interest them.
What do your kids like? Castles, boat rides, caves, water parks, beaches, steam trains, climbing around ruins, horseback riding, fishing? I'm sure your relatives will tell you about the water problems in Galway. Just drink bottled water while there.
