Smoke friendly ???

I want to take my mom to Ireland for her dream vacation next year, but she smokes.  During my recent research on Ireland, I have learned about the smoking bans across the country.  I need to find smoke friendly accomodations for our vacation!  I really want to stay in unique or high end properties, because this will be my mom's only trip to Ireland and I want it to be special, but I also want her to be able to smoke.  I am interested in manor houses and castles, even self catering accomodations, and possibly B and B's (if they don't care what time we get back from the pubs).  I am interested in hotels, also, but I want them to be unique--not the same cookie cutter rooms that we would see back in the states.  Any help with smoke friendly accomodations would be helpful.  I am also interested in the general opinion on smoking in Ireland and any other smoking advice.  Our entire trip will be in the Republic, mostly in the West and the South.

We traveled throughout the west and south in April-May and stayed exclusively in B&Bs. No Smoking signs were the norm; I saw no smoke-friendly B&Bs, including pubs and other public places. Smokers are welcome to smoke outside, and I saw many doing that.

Hope this helps,
Bill

All pubs and restaurants are smoke-free in Ireland now, and I did not see a single B&B that allowed smoking.  As the previous post noted, you might just have to realize that the smoking will go on outside, and perhaps you will be there at a time in the year when it is not an issue.

The times they are a changing ... and for the most part in Ireland, one of the changes is really crushing out smokers.  Since that is not likely to be altered, I'd plan on not finding too many places that allow it.

Dear Ventagette,

I think you are going to have to look at hotels as they still have smoking rooms or smoking floors. I took one of my friends to Ireland with me a number of times and she is a smoker. I never found a nice guesthouse or b&b that allowed smoking but did find hotels which did in certain rooms. As a non-smoker I love the new rules but I do understand the problem of finding nice accommodations for smokers. I'm sure you'll find a nice hotel.

Best of luck, Joan

Jeannie,

How lovely to be taking your mother to Ireland with you. Smoking inside is mostly a memory of the old Ireland now. Restaurants, pubs, public buildings, transportation, etc. have striclty no smoking. Many pubs have compensated by building areas outside (some covered) where smokers can gather.

For accommodations you should be looking at hotels. Many still have smoking rooms or entire wings. Most B&Bs, guesthouses and manor houses will not allow smoking inside. You will have to email places to see what their policies are.

Go to my "Links" page and click on the Be Our Guest link under Accommodations. There you will find most hotels in Ireland listed. Have fun choosing just the right places for your trip.
