Trip in 2008

Am planning leisure trip in Apr 08.  A couple questions!! My plan is as follows:
Day 1
Arr SNN,  Drive to Cashel   Spend the nite.
.  (Here a question? I read where it's about a 100 yd steep incline walk up to the Rock.   Can an elderly lady with a sometimes bad knee or ankle make it.  Also about how long would we be if we just did it on our own?)

Day 2
Tour the rock and then drive to Kenmare

Day 3
Sightsee and window and pub shop!!

Day 4
Drive the Beara Peninsula  Back to Kenmare

Day 5
Drive to Dingle

Day 6
Tour Dingle Peninsula, then spend the nite

Day 7
Drive to Talbert and spend nite

Day 8
Take ferry to Cliffs and then drive to Doolin or Lisdoonvarna and spend nite

Day 9
Drive to Ennis and spend nite

Day 10

Fly home

Day 5

xaimimgr,

Your plan looks good. Depending on how tired you are the first day, you might consider doing the Rock of Cashel on arrival. Will you be traveling alone or with others? If with others, have them drive up to the entrance of the rock and drop you off. They can then park and meet you inside. It is indeed a very steep incline. If you have a handicapped placard for your car take it to Ireland and use it there.

Time for seeing the Rock of Cashel depends on your interest. You can certainly walk through in 30 - 60 minutes. I suggest taking the tour so you are informed of everything. Then if you want you can walk around on your own. If you do the tour it may take a couple of hours.

Thank you Michele.  That was one of my big worries.  I will be with someone and we've decided that we will now spend 2 nites in Cashel.  Looks like we will be getting in at Shannon around 6am, but will be tired.   By spending two nites we can also see Adare.   Also want to take in the Bru Boru maybe.  Then may drive to Cahir and see castle there.  Everything else seems quite leisurely I think.
My concern also (and I asked about it once before) is the NEW Cliffs of Mohr.  I'm sure it's much different than when I was there in 2001.  Just wonder if it will ruin it for me.  My friend has lived in Europe, but never been to Ireland, so she won't know the difference.

We are looking about 22 Apr and wonder when I should start worrying about booking b&b's.????Is it to soon.?

xaimimgr,

Your itinerary is very similar to the one we just did. I really enjoyed Cashel, Joy's Rockside B&B was one of the best B&B's of our trip.

Mary,  I just saw that you were online.  I left a message on your whiteboard.  I  knew that our trips were almost identical.  Have you made a report yet?  Where can I find it.

I'm also looking at the Rockside B&B.  Glad you liked it.

Regarding your thoughts on the "new" Cliffs of Moher, I wouldn't be concerned.  The new visitor's center is quite interesting, and the walk to the cliffs is now much easier than it was.  The sights are still spectacular -- that hasn't changed a bit!smile

xaimimgr,

Just wanted to throw my vote in for the Rockside in Cashel. Perfect location and wonderful hosts!

Thanks to Michelle's recommendation, we spent a wonderful night there!

Have a great trip! I just got back a few weeks ago and I was itching to go back before the plane landed in the US! It may be time to work up the immigration papers, lol!

Thanks for the info.  Am getting more anxious as days go by.  Also looking at Ashmore B&B in Cashel.  I use a public computer and could not get into Joy's website without doing something on this one.  I'm really not literate on these things.!! I'm sure I'll have more questions as the days roll along..

xaimimgr,

I believe that Joy's Rockside House website was down for a few days. Give it another try. It is a good place to stay even if you never see the website. Most B&Bs will start taking reservations after the first of the year for the current year. If you are anxious you can get a head start but most will probably tell you to contact them again.

You may have to change your Bru Boru Show plans. The musical evening does not start till later in the year and runs through mid-September. The Sounds of History Museum will be open.

If you have my book it will give you lots of ideas for sightseeing around where you will be staying.

Thanks Michele.  Yes, I see the Bru Boru isn't until Mid June.  Just didn't read right!!
Another question.  What should I do first.  The airline, the car and then the b&b's.  I noticed on one site they wanted a flight number for the car rental.  Also Emlaugh said she would look at the dates when I had my flt confirmed.

Think this should be about the last questions until I start booking.  Think the next thing will be to order your book.  Guess we won't have the benefit of discount coupons tho since we're going in Apr.
Thanks for all who have also helped..

Judy

Judy,

Usually a Flght # is an option which you don't necessarily need to book your car rental. Make sure you check the Kemwel site using Michele's portal. THey and their sister company usually have the best price and will price match if they don't. The advantage to booking with them is that you can have it all paid for before your trip. That will mean more available funds on the trip.  I would look for a flight in August - September time frame, as most airlines book out 8 months in advance.  I have never had a problem with booking my B&Bs prior to booking my flight. In fact, I usually book my next year's lodging within a week after arriving home.

In Dingle, I would suggest WildFlower Cottage. It is close to town Centre and has wonderful sea views. In Talbert, Dillane's Farmhouse serves up a warm welcome. Tom & Mary took good care of me there and were full of local stories. If I might make a suggestion, spend two nights in Ennis instead of one. You could stay at Temple Gate or Old Ground, both hotels, at town centre. Spend the first day doing the Cliffs/Burren loop and then the second exploring Ennis. In Kenmare, I enjoyed my stay at Annagry House. They have REAL coffee!! biggrin

Judy,

Having firm dates and your flight will mean you can then go on to making your itinerary and then reservations for car and B&Bs. Bit is right that you do not need a flight number for booking a car. It is an option. If you supply the flight number to the car company they will know if you are delayed.

Keep checking on the rates for airfares. Sign up for their newsletters so you will be informed of specials.

Bit,
I checked on the Wildflower site and for the time I'm looking it says Sat-Sat only.  I'm asssuming you have to rent for the whole week.  We only plan 2 nites in Dingle.  I was looking at Dillane's also.
I guess I'm just getting anxious and want to get the air out of the way.
I know the car rental will be the worst problem.  I'm over 70, so my friend will do the driving, but we'll put it on my credit card.  I talked to Dooly;s about that and that doesn't seem to be a prob.  I just like to have an 800 number that I can talk to real people.  My prob, I know.

Michele,  I printed the order form for your book, but will have to cut and paste.  Couldn't get it all on one from the printer here.  Do you think I should wait to get the 2008 edition or go ahead and get the 2007.  I would imagine the sightseeing info will be about the same in either.  Maybe just places to stay different..

Thanks again for info

Judy

Judy,

Regarding Wildflower, that is only for self-catering rental. If you click on the enquiry button up top next to the rates, you can book by the night. You may have clicked on the Holiday Rental button, an understandable thing to do. Otherwise, for a simple B&B booking, they have never had a minimum stay requirement.

Bit,

Thank you, that is exactly what I did.  So I did go back and got info on daily rates etc.  Looks like a nice place.  Not sure about extending in Ennis tho.  We've already extended in Cashel.  First day after overnite flight and friend wasn't sure she could handle the first day.  We;ll see.

Thank you.

Judy

Bit, if you see this could you answer a question for me.
I did book the Wildflower Cottage in Dingle and just today I found them someplace else and it says they don't have private parking. When you were there was there a problem about parking "on the street". Someone says you may have to park a ways away.
I have all my B&B's confirmed now and the airline tickets paid for. Just need to book the car. YUK..

We just returned from our first trip to Ireland and did a similar trip.  We started in Doolin though.  I will post our itinerary soon, maybe it will help you with your planning.

The drive from Dingle to Doolin is only about 3 hours.  With a break for lunch (we really enjoyed our stop in Listowel) and the break on the ferry, it is really a very enjoyable drive.  I drove this route myself--my first day driving in Ireland--my husband and brother-in-law were golfing.  Actually, as I write this post, I realize that I drove from Doolin to Castlegregory(right before the Conor Pass)--so not quite to Dingle---I could have gone on though--I really got my confidence up on that drive.  I was totally creeped out thinking about driving in Ireland--not as bad as I imagined.

If you eliminated an overnight stop on the way, you could spend an extra night somewhere else. It would be worth the longer drive.

Judy,

As many people often mention renting a car is the least favorite part of planning a trip to Ireland. Do look at my "Car Rental" page and be sure to scroll down and read it all. It will really help you make your decisions and be an informed consumer.

Linda,

I'm happy to hear the driving went well for you.

I had thought that they were making a small pad for a few guest vehicles there at the cottage. I found a parking spot almost right in front but that has been a few year's since I was there. Mike was there most recently. I will send him an email and ask him about the parking situation.

Kemwel is very traveler friendly, regarding auto rental. They are quite helpful and usually the best rate I have found has been through them or their sister company, AutoEurope.

Judy,

Instead of tracking Mike, as I know he is busy, I emailed Marianne, the proprietress of Wildflower.

Her humour shone through in her response, as she indicated that if a car can float they have parking available there. biggrin However, since most rental cars don't float, they have a parking area across the street from the cottage. You will thoroughly enjoy your stay there, with the view of the Bay & Marianne's wonderful personality.

Slan Beo,
