With all the travel restrictions for items carried on, are there restrictions on what we can bring in our baggage that is checked thru? Traveling with kids, I'd like to bring a few boxes of snack bars for the car rides. Also, we will be staying with family in Galway for 5 days as part of our 2 weeks, and not sure of what to bring for them as a courtesy gift ....any ideas? They are a lovely older couple (early 60's) who just moved into a newer house, but I do not know their tastes or decor. Can we bring a few bottles of our favorite wine? I wouldn't think that California wines are prevalent over there, or is this a no-no for customs....Help?!
This March we travelled to Ireland with wine packed in our checked luggage and had no problems at all. We had four people in our group, and each had two bottles, which we used as gifts for the B&B hosts that we liked. You should have no problem as long is it isn't something you are planning to take on board with you.
We just returned from Ireland and had taken a jar of peanut butter and jelly packets to have over there for the kids. It came in handy during our travels. So any food snacks are ok as long as you pack them in your checked luggage. As far as the wine, if you are leaving from the USA, you cannot carry on any liquids over 3 oz. Check the tsa web site at www.tsa.gov, they will have a list of restricted carry on items. The tsa rule states, "with the exception of medication, any amount of liquid including alcohol greater than 3 onces must be packed in your checked baggage." We carried empty water bottles through security at OHare airport and filled them after going through security, but were not allowed to do that at Shannon. To purchase water after security was $2.00 per bottle. We also purchased a lot of snacks for the kids in Ireland, but all the food over there is very expensive and you know kids are always hungry.
California wine is readily available in Ireland. I wouldn't want to pack it in checked luggage because the bottles could break. However, it is perfectly acceptable to check it if you want to take the chance.
You might want to consider something evocative of your area of California. A beautiful photo book, handicrafts, artwork, a local cookbook or calendar. Start thinking about it and looking in the local shops and you will be surprised what you will find. Then when your relatives look at their gift it will always remind them of you and where you live.
Just a tip if you do try this -- We bought huge zip lock bags and put one bottle each in those before we packed them in the luggage. That was a precaution of course, but packed around clothing and in a strategic manner, none of use suffered any wine spillage!
