Just read a news article that several roads in England have flooded due to the tremendous amount of rain they've had...there is even some talk of sandbags along the Thames. Has this also affected roadways in Ireland? I know they are used to quite more drizzley weather than sunshine, but have also heard that this summer is wetter and cooler than usual. Thought it would be a good idea to check in with those who are there or recently returned on current weather trends...we are leaving in 3 weeks and will start planning our luggage and driving routes soon!
Maureen, We were in Ireland June 26 - July 8. The weather was amazing....as in it could be sunny without a cloud around and 10 minutes later, clouds would blow in and it would rain. This happened several times throughout just about every day. So all the advice about dressing in layers is spot on. A good light weight rain coat with a hood will be your best friend. I got a great coat at an Eddie Bauer outlet for under $10, it was perfect...I could even stuff it into the glove compartment. Have a great trip!
We were in both the Republic and Northern Ireland from June 20 -3 July. While I am told that this has been one of the rainiest summers in memory, most of our days were mixed. As it turned out MOST of the heavier rains only seemed to fall while we were traveling. It always seemed to stop before it was time to get out of the car, with only a few notable exceptions.
Being from Florida, I had expected it to be cool, but most days it seemed downright CHILLY! The temp gauge seemed to only show 12-18 degrees Celsius and one evening it actually showed 10.5!
We carried waterproof jackets, two small (TOTES - type) umbrellas and good all-weather shoes and they were in constant use.

It is true that you should be prepared. No matter how sunny it is I always take my rainproof windbreaker and a small folding umbrella. It has saved me from getting soaked many times. With the quick-moving weather pattern things change rapidly.
I just saw something about the rain in England on Nightline. It is being blamed on El Nino, La Nina and global warming. Everyone has their own theory. They showed a map and the pattern has warm air from the south clashing with cool air from the north right over England. It is stubbornly sitting over England. Since Ireland is not too far away we can only hope it does not shift to the west.
There have been a few flooding problems in Ireland, but overall, nothing that would have a big impact on someone traveling. The trouble spots are isolated (some of them require detours, but many more are being remedied with a traffic cone in the water and cars traveling in both directions working together to get by safely).
Last month, many areas, especially around Belfast and Dublin, were getting nervous about the amount of rain, but now the news is just talking about "When will it stop."
The good news is that the sun has been appearing a lot more this week and hopes are high that summer will arrive before September.
The sun is out now, so I'm going to get away from this computer and enjoy it while I can :)
