I wear and take a pair of SAS shoes also and I have over-the-shoe protection if needed. They are plastic and light weight. I got mine from Magellan catalog.
I don't know what sort of shoe you are looking for, but I have Timberland "White Ledge" waterproof boots. They are comfortable and give lots of support. I would NEVER have made it to the top of Croagh Patrick without them!
I am wearing them here in WV this summer, as well, as I need the ankle support. I sprained my ankle in Dingle and have not recovered yet! They are all-seaon boots.
I did very well with a pair of Merrill Gortex low hiking shoes. My husband and son were both pleased with Keen waterproof hiking shoes. We hiked some, walked mostly, and occasionally got caught in the rain. We climbed Mount Errigal and got some bad weather at Slieve Leage but the shoes were no worse for the wear.
