Helen, did you get to take the Viking Cruise from Athlone to Clonmacnoise? I really, really want to do that if it's worthwhile, and if it goes when we are there!
Actually, we were too early ( May ) and they weren't doing the cruise yet. We did stop at the Tourist Bureau, in the Castle, and they would have booked it there for us. I was disappointed, for I guess I wanted to see how the Vikings arrived at Clonmacnoise. Only I wouldn't have "pillaged""!! As it was, it is a nice drive, and I wandered down to the boat docks to get some idea of coming by the waterway. One really can't see much of the area from there, you really have to come from the north. I would really recommend coming by water, it would be an inspiring view. Although those terrible Vikings came from the south, didn't they?
I shall be waiting to hear if you do the cruise! Have a wonderful trip!
Maybe we'll just do a little pillaging, so we can say we did. The Castle, in Athlone? We'll just phone a day or two in advance and hope for the best. Either way, we're going to Clonmacnoise. To make the cruise we'll have to leave the B&B pretty early to allow for getting lost, finding the Strand, etc. but I think it will be worthwhile if we can do it.
Yes, the tourist office is in Athlone Castle. It is in the center of town and you can't miss it. There is parking just outside. While there you must pop across the street to Sean's Bar (one of Ireland's oldest pubs) even it it is just for a look around.
Now, how would I have ever even had a hint about a Viking cruise, Sean's Bar, or any of the other delights we'll see and experience without all my wonderful friends at IrelandYes? Thank you, thank you!
