Aer Lingus Arrival at Airport?

Well, its here!  We leave on Saturday for Dublin.  I was checking the Aer Lingus website, (as I was doing every 2 hours during the strike threat) noticed they recommend you arrive at the Airport 3 1/2 hours before departure.   Is that much time neccessary?  Has anyone flown out of Boston recently, did you arrive that early?  Thanks Jane

Jane,

I wish you a safe, uneventful trip over and back. As well, may you have a most amazing adventure during your time in Eire.

The rule of thumb is usually 2 1/2 to 3 hours ahead of schedule for an international flight. I have a very jaundiced view of the Logan airport but that was because of a very bad experience with the security screeners as we were making our connecting flight home. Hopefully someone here has used Logan more often and can give you insight.

I look forward to reading all about your trip upon your return.

Slan Agus Beannacht (So long and blessings),

Bit

I would have avoided it if I could, it is the most difficult airport to drive around, I am making my daughter drop us off as she is the only one who knows her way around it.  I am looking forward tothis "great Adventure"  It is my first trip over, hopefully not my last.  I will be sure and let everyone here know how everything goes, this has been the most helpful place, thank you all for all the answers to a first timers questions.  Talk to everyone in a week.  Jane

Jane, we are flying out of Boston Sep 5. I'm anxious to hear your experiences. We fly from Detroit to Boston. I wanted Boston because it was a short flight over. Hope we don't have serious problems. We have at least a 3 hr layover both ways.

Merle, I will let you know how the flight goes and what we find to do while we hang around Logan for 3 hours.  Jane

Jane,

I have never flown from Boston Logan so it looks lilke you are the guinea pig here. There must be a reason why they want you there 3 1/2 hours before the flight. Since is is an important international flight, I think I would take them at their word and arrive early. I always enjoy "people watching" at the airports. I usually travel with a Reader's Digest magazine because of the short, easy to read articles and jokes. It is also small and easy to carry.

Bon voyage! Have a fantastic time. We will anxiously await hearing how it goes.

We flew out of JFK last month and it was a much better experience than our connecting flight last year through Logan. Granted, we took a direct flight this year, mainly because of our bad experiences at Logan last year.

The three hour window provided a nice cushion of comfort and reduced anxiety, and Michelle, like you, I enjoy the people watching!

Hell All,
I flew out of Logan back in 2004, and I believe there was only an overnight flight which departed at 8 pm. it arrived in Shannon at 7:15 Ireland time.A nice peaceful 5 hr flight.
Hopefully someone has flown more recently.
We arrived 3 hrs early, and spent a good amount of time killing time.
They offered "samples" of Jamison in the duty free shop near out gate, so
I did not mind the wait !
Cheers!
Mark D.

Michele, Jane, Roy and Mark

I am sure that my experience was a one-of deal. The fact that it was not just one screener involved in the incident but the staff of three and their supervisor made an even larger lasting impression. I have never, before nor since, been treated with such callous disregard and disdain. I reported it both to Logan and the head office of the TSA but received no satisfaction from either. I was left with a $150 cleaning bill for my custom felt Cowboy hat, which they had used for a frisbee, and my companion was left with a tuneable bodhran which could no longer be tuned because they confiscated her tuning key as they considered it a "tool" and a weapon.

Then to add insult to harassment, our luggage, a large portion of it, didn't make it to Dallas with us. We had been instructed to "just add it to the pile over there" and did so with apprehension. Needless to say, of the 9 pieces of luggae, only my two and my partner's luggae came through. 2 pieces were delivered to our hotel the next morning. The other 3 didn't show up until three days after our trip and were delivered to our other companion at her home in Oklahoma.

Slan Beo,

Bit

If I am not mistaken, several of the 9/11 terrorists had entered the country through Logan, which was at the time considered to be the least secure of the coastal airports. Probably that is why they have beefed up security there.

We flew out of Logan in '93 and '97 and had no problems at all. Now we fly Continental so go throught Newark.

Dude, you are right about the 9/11 originating airport. I just plan to follow all the packing rules and security rules and avoid (I hope) the hassle.

Dude

I'm contemplating flying out of BOS, but also have EWR in mind.  How was it changing planes in Newark.  After reading about BOS problems, may change my mind.  I'm trying to coordinate  a flt for me from Indy and for my friend from Charlotte.  She knows EWR  fairly well, so you think we should do that?

EWR was no problem at all for us. There was the little problem of weather or something holding me up in Houston so that I almost literally walked off one plane and onto another, but that wouldn't affect you. For the September trip we have an hour and 15 minutes layover which should be adequate provided we leave Houston on time.

Last trip we all met up in Newark; this trip we were able to meet in Houston so we don't have to find each other in the larger EWR. If you don't change airlines I think it's easy.

Another option you might have is to fly into Atlanta and catch a Delta nonstop to Shannon. We weren't able to make connections from Amarillo to do that but I'm contemplating it for the future.

Well, yardsailor is now off on her adventure and three weeks from now I'll be somewhere between Kingsville, Texas and Newark. Woo hoo!

It's been interesting reading what everyone has to say about Logan. We live 20 miles from the airport and use if all of the time. Tomorrow night I travel to Knock (Co Mayo) on flyglobespan airlines. Hadn't planned on getting to Logan more than 2 hours ahead of time. Hmmm?

flyglobespan out of BOS and JFK to Ireland is relatively new and I'm anxious to see how it goes. Once you're familiar with Logan, it's not too bad.

Re Logan security. Just before 9/11, my husband and I were travelling from Boston to Montana. We were shocked when we weren't asked to show any form if ID!

Due to a Comair strike in April of 2001, we had a last minute change to our flight -- instead of flying out of JAX, we had to be rebooked via MCO.  In my haste to make the flight time, in order to connect to Aer Lingus out of Logan, I forgot to remove my Leatherman - type multitool.  I usually put it in my checked bag, but in the rush, I forgot it.  Security in Orlando scrutinized it briefly, but let it pass.
It's manufactured by BUCK, so the opening arraingment is somewhat unique and I made it a point to NOT fold out the included, 3" knife blade.  At Logan, however, the young girl was ADAMANT about checking it out --IN DETAIL.  She then proceded to unfold it completely (which, including both handles, makes the whole thing about 10-12" long --though only 3" of THAT is actually sharp) and proceded to wave it about in the air above her head.
She shouted out something like, "Wow!  This is NEAT!  I've got to get me one of these!"
Then, she smiled and handed it back to me -- STILL OPEN --because she was afraid she might cut herself, "since it was SOOO sharp."

When I heard that the 9-11 high-jackers had flown out of Logan, I wasn't terribly suprised.

Post-9/11, I've used Logan twice more.  I'm sure they wouldn't let my multi-tool pass through security, again, but the delays still didn't strike me as particularly lengthy OR thorough.

Kirstin --

Check for a post by Officer35 concerning flyglobespan.
He had a bad experience, out of JFK, I believe.

Kirstin,

As Bob says there was a real problem with FlyGlobespan. 1 2 Travel was even refunding money to people who had booked on that airline through them. I hope they have now cleaned up there act and gotten organized. Let us know how you liked them when you get back.

It's particularly concerning that your companion's tuneable bodhran was damaged due to the confiscation of her tuning key by the TSA, as they considered it a "tool" and a weapon.
