Hello, my first posting on your forum! My fiance and I will be making our first trip to Ireland within 2 weeks. We are really excited. We will be going along with his 3 brothers & wives (2 couples, 1 single). We've been working on an itinerary and have a decent idea on where we're going and where we'll be staying. However, we have 1 day which is just driving me crazy. We'll be arriving in Dublin on 9/24 and will be staying there for 2 nights to see the city and sleep off some of the jet lag. On the 26, we will be leaving and heading for Kinsale! One of his brothers made reservations for an Inn in Kinsale on the 26 and arrangements for us to have lunch at the clubhouse at Old Head on the 27 so it appears we have to make this long trek in one day. I have mentioned how long this trip will take, but his 2 older brothers are determined that this is the way to go. So what I'd like to know is how long this will take (I'm looking at least 6 hours) and the best route to go. We've already made reservations for an Inn in Kilarney for the 27 & 28. I suppose we could make some changes as long as we make them within the cancellation window. Trying to plan a trip with this number of people who all have different ideas is to say the least a little frustrating!
Welcome to my forum! I know the frustrations associated with making such a group happy, since I plan itineraries for people all the time. It all boils down to everyone acknowledging that there will be some give and take involved in the trip. Everyone should get to see or do something important to them, knowing that the next person will do the same, and so forth. No one person should have all their wishes catered to, excluding the wishes of another. You must share the limited time available for your trip. Agree on that right now.
Without knowing your whole itinerary it is hard to comment on much. However, the drive from Dublin to Kinsale will take approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic, etc. Since you will most likely stop for lunch along the way 6 sounds more like it. Your best route will take you on the N7 to Portlaoise, the N8 south to Cork and the R600 to Kinsale.
You will be passing by some excellent sightseeing: The Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle. An extra early start may give you time to stop at them and break up the long driving day.
I hope you enjoy your trip to Ireland. Perhaps one day you will get to return again for a slower trip. Let us know how it goes. And enjoy lunch at Old Head. There are fabulous views from the golf course there.
