Discover Card: Accepted in Ireland?

Is the Discover Card widely accepted in Ireland?  Particularly for car rental?  I found out that Discover DOES cover the CDW on car rentals in Ireland, IF they accept the card.  Please advise!

Thanks,
Jasaco

Jasaco,

Discover is not used in Ireland. The main cards in use are Visa and MasterCard followed by American Express and Diner's Club. I will have to call Discover back when they can actually answer the phone (they had me on hold for hours today). But the first person I spoke with there said Discover did not cover Ireland.

That's so frustrating, because I spoke with TWO people there today who both said that, yes, it does cover CDW in Ireland.  But, of course, they could not confirm that the rental company accepts Discover in the first place.  Sounds like maybe they won't.  Too bad.  Otherwise, I only have Visa cards, and no MC or Diner's Club.  Wonder how fast I could get one of those...?

Jasaco,

Go to my "Car" page as I have the phone numbers for MasterCard and Diner's Club there. It would be harder to get the proper MasterCard as only some World and business MasterCards still cover Ireland. However, Diner's Club has a yearly fee. Still it might cost less that CDW and Super CDW.

Pretty fast, actually.  I applied for a MC back in 04 specifically for my 1st Ireland trip ... and I got approved and had the card in hand in 2 weeks.  Saved me with the rental company.  :)

Shawn,

Thanks for your first-hand info on how long the process took you.
