Hello! I love all of the discussions on this site.
My husband and I are about to head to Ireland for New Year's Eve and about a week after as well.
Right now our tentative plan is:
Day 1 Dublin - stay at Beweley's Ballsbridge Day 2 Kilkenny - stay at hostel Day 3 Cork - stay at hostel Day 4 Killarney - stay at hostel Day 5 Killarney - stay at same hostel Day 6 Galway - stay at B&B Day 7 Dublin - stay at Camden Deluxe
We know we are spreading ourselves a bit thin, but want to see so much. We're young and will be taking only our backpacks.
My question is whether we should cut out Kilkenny - but we are planning on taking the Bus Eireann using the Open Road Pass. Online it looks like it will take about 5.5 to 6 hours to get from Dublin to Cork. We would then spend two days in Cork instead of one.
Or should we cut out Galway (which would pain me, but we're hoping to go back someday and do the Cliffs of Moher) and go Dublin - Kilkenny - Cork - Killarney - Killarney - Cork - Dublin?
Any advice you all have would be wonderful. We really do not want to drive, so are counting on the Bus Eireann being reliable and running even on New Year's Day. How long can we expect the bus trips to take? I'm not sure the website is giving me a clear picture of that.
Welcome to my fourm! I am glad to hear you are enjoying reading the posts here.
Your suspicions that you are trying to do too much is accurate. Days are short in January. It will also take time busing around Ireland. Have you looked into train travel as well? lt would be much quicker than buses.
My best advice is to go back to the drawing board and re-think your plans. Consider the short days, possible bad weather, and the time it will take to get around by public transport. For only a week you should think about choosing two bases and staying put. How about Dublin and Galway? Or Dublin and Killarney? Otherwise you will be spending all your time on buses.
