To Cell Phone or Not To Cell Phone

Posted this on the wrong part of the site. So here I go again.

Question is: Should I consider getting a cell phone while I'm in Ireland/London or forget about it?  I'm so used to have one and the sense of safety it provides but if it's more hassle than it's worth, I'll do with out it.  I vaguely recall a time before they existed.

Please let me know what you think and what you would advise if we were to go with one.  We're going to be in ROI, NI and London.  I'm hoping to check in with my family back home once or twice while I'm there -- counting on the internet for that mostly.  I could see using the phone to make overnight accomodations and calling the automobile association or whomever in the event of a breakdown.

Thanks,

Donna

I bought a pay as you go phone from the Vodaphone kiosk in Dublin Arrivals.
It worked out great - but I also had my cell phone from the States that worked great as well.
Just haven't seen that bill, yet.

We just did 12 days in the ROI without reservations or a cell phone and did great. There always seemed to be a public phone handy, and the pre-purchase Eircom card was very affordable. It was a relief not to drag the electronics with us on vacation, there was enough to keep track of the way it was. WC

Donna,

Like WC, I just use a phone card while in Ireland. But I don't need to make a lot of phone calls home. Instead I communicate by email.

You can certainly buy a phone on arrival in Ireland. There is a Vodaphone store at Dublin Airport and a Western Cellular shop in Shannon Skycourt Mall (nearby the airport). You should ask them about usage in No. Ireland and London.

You can inquire of your current cell phone as to whether it will work abroad and pricing. Some people purchase phones on Ebay and here is another place to purchase a low-cost phone before your trip: Mobal World Phone
