St. Patricks Day Travel

We were thinking about going to Ireland over St. Patricks day. How is the weather in ireland? Is it very rainy? We would most likely do a driving tour. Is it worth it to go in march or should we wait til a later month? Will all the tourist sites be open at this time of year?

Thanks!
Jennifer

Jennifer,

Welcome to my forum! You must expect rain in Ireland 365 days a year. Take an umbrella and hope you don't use it. March can be good and is off season, with the exception of St. Patrick's Day. This year Easter is in March so that will be a busy time for Irish people.

Not all tourist sites will be open. If you plan your itinerary carefully you can take advantage of those that are. If you have a choice of months I suggest April/May for seeing Ireland's lovely springtime.

Last year when I was in Ireland for St. Patrick's Day, we had:   1. Perfect weather 55 degrees sunny with no wind at all, on the day we went to see the Cliffs of Moher.  2.  A couple of days later we were in Dingle for St. Patrick's Day and it was sleeting sideways with about 40 mph winds off the bay.  3.  Two days later we were walking around Banty with no jacket on.

Moral of the story?  You'll get it all and be able to plan on nothing that time of the year, but that's what makes it fun.

Worry about packing, about planning, but for goodness sake don't worry about the weather over there, as it changes by the moment.   biggrin

Sidz,

Thanks for your wise advice and personal weather report. As the Irish say, there is no bad weather only people who are not dressed properly.

Smiling at this... we call these sweet days in between bad ones "pet days." They are a strong  feature of Irish weather.

Just now, dry and clear and sunny for some days now, with hard frost at night.... But by the weekend it could be storming again..

And by St Patrick's Day there will be new lambs in the fields, and the daffodils will be a glory.
Blessings this day

Anchoress,

You are painting a beautiful picture of spring in Ireland. It is my favorite season. I can't wait to be back again!
