Gifts from New York

My husband works in a hotel in New York and from time to time, he receives gifts from the guests (some repeat, some first timers) for being so helpful.  They're token gifts from where they are from and we've always appreciated the foresight and generosity of these people.  I thought I'd like to bring some tokens of my own in anticipation of thanking the particularly accommodating B&B owners or family members of the person allowing us to stay in her home.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what would be appreciated from the Big Apple?  I do have a connection at the famous Katz' deli and could bring some of their vacuum packed corned beef or pastrami but I'm not sure how that would be received.  A friend thought an NYPD or a Yankees hat might be a good one.  I just don't have a clue.  Obviously, the smaller the token, the more people I can give them out to.

Dean and Deluca has wonderful small tins of their finest sweets. My favorite are the rum balls. They are neatly packaged and would be easy for transport.

While everyone enjoys goodies (food), most people have admiration and respect for NYC. I would guess that your guests would get a kick out of any of the Big Apple type gifts which are sold to tourists in Time Square.

What types of gifts does your husband appreciate receiving?

My husband's received everything from fine linens and coffee from a Panamanian guest to small liquour bottles to shortbread from the UK -- mostly food items.  With him, it really is the thought that counts and the fact that the gift was brought from their country of origin.  I like the Dean and Deluca idea.

Thanks for the advice.

Donna,

As is often mentioned here on the forum gifts for your hosts are not expected. However, if you get superior service it certainly is not out of line to offer a token of your satisfaction. Try to think of small things that you can easily take with you. Anything to do with NY would be appreciated. How about calendars? They are flat and easily transported. It would remind your hosts of you for a whole year. The sweets that Jill & John recommended are good too. Do not take meat products. They will not be allowed into Ireland.
