Hi everyone - I've been lurking on this site a few weeks now trying to plan a trip to Ireland in early May. I don't know the next chance I'll get to go back, so I want to see as much as a I can. The purpose of the trip is sightseeing, not relaxation, so I'm okay with doing a lot in a short amount of time. However, I don't want to have a ridiculous schedule and be forced to cut things once there. Can I please have honest opinions (especially yours, Michelle)?
Day 1: Arrive Dublin around noon, drop off luggage at hotel, begin Hop-on/off tour for a few hours Day 2: Up at 9, more Hop-on/off tour, hop-off near rental car place, leave for Kilkenny around 2 (2 hour drive) Day 3: Up at 9, Leave for Waterford at 10 (1 hour drive), Factory Tour, leave for Cashel @1 (2 hour drive), Rock of Cashel, Depart for Killarney @ 4 (2.5 hour drive), Picnic dinner in Killarney Park around 7 Day 4: Up at 9, depart for Dingle (1.5 hour drive), lunch in town, drive the Peninsula (4 hours), depart for Tralee at 5 (1 hour drive) Day 5: Up at 10, Drive to Bunratty (2 hours), Lunch & Bunratty castle, possibly explore Shannon (lodging in Bunratty) Day 6: Depart Shannon Airport
I'm most concerned about Day 3, as those are all stops I want to make. I've excluded Cork because I've heard the Blarney Castle really isn't a must see. Any suggestions/corrections?
Welcome to the forum! Since your trip is to fit in as much sightseeing as possible and not to relax, I think your trip is doable. You will be moving right along though. Some of your estimated drive times may take longer especially from Cashel to Killarney.
However, I will comment on one thing. You say you will get up at 9 am. I don't know how long it takes you to get ready but most B&Bs serve breakfast from 8 to 9, sometimes till 10. You should think about rising at 7 or 8, get ready, pack, have breakfast and be on your way by 9 at the latest. If you get up at 7 instead of 9 it will give you two more hours each day. If you require a lot of sleep then go to bed early.
For Day 3 you should plan on being at the Waterford factory when they open to get the first tour.
Reservations expire at 6 pm for B&Bs and hotels. If you are running late be sure to let your hosts know so they don't think you are a no show and give your room away.
Can you do it? Yes. But it will be a green blur tour. When you get back you will have to let us know if you liked doing it that way. We would enjoy hearing about it.
From my trips there, I can tell you that I would feel rushed and chasing myself with the schedule you have listed. I'd try to cut it back a bit, see more of the sites on another trip, and make sure you enjoy this one. Many people on this site will implore you to consider two night stays in a given region, and that is great advice. You have one night stays throughout.
We're all quite different in the way we travel, so putting myself in anyone else's shoes is never high on my list, but in my opinion I'd find a way to slow down your trip a bit. It's going to be in the busy season, places will be crowded, and you will not get from one place to another in the time you think. I do agree with your thoughts on Blarney Castle, which is a raving tourist trap and well worth missing. The grounds around there are wonderful, but so are many other places in Ireland.
The "I really want to do" things you list on Day 3 are all wonderful, but that is unfortunately the day that you maybe pushed the envelope. Killkenny-Waterford-Cashel-to Killarney in one day is a stretch just driving, but with tours, stops, and seeing the scenary along the way, it's about as green as the blur can get.
On Day 4, you list just having lunch in Dingle town, and later in the day go to Tralee to spend the night. Many people find Dingle one of the most special towns in Ireland. I sure would spend the night there instead of Tralee if given the choice. Do you perhaps have family reasons for Tralee?
As Michele noted, it will be interesting to see how this goes if you stick with this busy agenda. No matter what you end up doing, however, have great fun and let us know the results.
Sid, the only specific reason for Tralee is that we were looking into staying at the Ballyseede Castle. We definitely want one castle night and since we're trying to do this on a budget, this one looks like it suits the need!
That sounds fun. I guess I'm one of those people who find Dingle town so special. If you like traditional Irish music, it's a shame to be on the western coastal region and not spend at least one night in Dingle or Doolin. The music and pubs are really something!
