ATM and Time question

How much does the ATM machine allow you to take out at one time in Ireland?

We are arriving on 23 Apr and driving to Cashel and spending two nites.  If we are able to visit the Rock on the 23rd, would we have enough time on the 24th to drive to Cahir and on down to Kinsale?  Of course this depends on how tired we will be on the 23rd as to how much we get done.  I would also like to go over to Adare on the way to Cashel>  Does the Kinsale thing look doable?   It looks like the roads are mostly good highways between there.  Then on the 25th we will be driving "cross country" to Kenmare.  So I figured that would take most of that day.  Am I out of line in my thinking???

It probably varies as far as which one you use, but using our Visa over there I think we were able to get 200 euros max each time.

I was limited by what my bank would allow. I took my and my husband's ATM cards so was able to get twice as much as I could on my own. Sorry, I don't remember what the withdrawals were, although 200 euros and 200 pounds sterling stick in my mind.

Before we left on our last trip, I went to my bank here in the States and told them I wanted to raise the amount I could take from an ATM . I believe it was $500 per visit. I also told them when and what country I'd be travelling.

Good Luck, Joan

Judy,

As everyone has mentioned you are limited by your bank or credit union as to how much you can withdraw per day. I usually take about 200 euro at a time.

No problem driving from Cashel to Kinsale with a stop at Cahir Castle. If you are planning on taking the coastal route from Kinsale to Kenmare then it will take a good part of the day, especially if you make some stops for sightseeing.

Maybe this has changed; Bank ATMs and some others are set up now for up to E200. But some outside shops allow only E150. It varies; at least here in Donegal....

Dry, warm and sunny weather just starting to chill with a keen breeze. February often throws these "pet days".
Yesterday was like summer...

Blessings...

Thank you all for the info. I was hoping it would be more than 200 euros to avoid to many transaction fees. I was going to have my bank up my amt to withdraw to cover the currency difference. Looks like I won't have to if I can only get 200 at a time.

Michelle,
We will be staying in Cashel 2 nites, so on the 2nd day I thought about going to Kinsale and then returning to Cashel for the nite. On the 3rd day we are leaving for Kenmare for 3 nites. Going thru Mallow. But would it be a bad day trying to go from Cashel to Kinsale and back?

The time is getting nearer and I'm really getting anxious.

xaimimgr,

As I mentioned above, I took out $500 dollars worth of euro at a time. This was 2005, maybe it's changed in the last couple of years. Now, I did use the ATMs in front of banks, I'm sure it's would not be the same at gas stations and stores. You must go to your bank and up the amount you want to take out and be sure and tell them you'll be using your card in Ireland for the dates of ? That trip I used cash for my guesthouses, gas, food, really just about everything. My Guesthouse in Kenmare, The Lodge, gave me a discount for paying in cash. Since I had 2 rooms for 7 nights, this was a great help.

Judy,

Try taking out more than 200 euro and see what happens. If you get an error message you can try for a lower amount. You can always pop into the bank and ask them if they have a limit on ATM withdrawals.

You could contact a couple of banks in Ireland via email right now to ask your questions:

And the bank ATMs in Ireland don't charge for usage, but the ones in c-stores and petrol stations may. Our hostess in Limavady and her husband own a petrol station and she assured us that they don't charge a fee, but we never did find it to test that! We ended up at an UlsterBank the two or three times we went to get cash.

My local bank (not a big chain bank but gradually becoming a force in the area) doesn't charge for ATM withdrawals from other ATMs, and rebates fees that other ATMs may charge. Must be some sort of price war going on in the banking industry. There seems to be either a bank or credit union at every intersection in our little town.

Michele; you cannot ask for more than the E200 at one time. It is  a press- button system with a limit of E200..... Of course you can to all that twice.

Anchoress,

Thanks for the info. I think people are trying to avoid extra fees by taking out more at each transaction. Having the 200 euro limit is probably some sort of a safeguard that the banks have. I suppose in popular areas it would be too easy for tourists to empty the machines if they were allowed larger transactions.

Anchoress,

But I did, I promise. I used the machines in front of the banks in Ennistymon, Dingle and the same in Kenmare. Maybe they are different than the ones in Donegal. I do remember when I first started travelling to Ireland, the Irish banks did have the $200 limit. I don't live there but I've been eight times since 1996 and I have a fairly good memory, very good memory when it comes to money matters.

Kindest Regards, Joan

Thanks again all.
My bank will charge $3 for every withdraw, hence the reason for trying to get more at one time.

I tried to acess the banks you gave me Michelle, but since I use a library computer, I didn't have much luck. I had that same prob with The Bunrarry Lodge and one in Cashel. I did use my sisters computer for Bunratty and did get in at the discount rate you spoke about. Doesn't include breakfast, but since we must be at the airport by 7AM that's better for us.

Also, Can someone tell me if I'm taking in to much when I try and drive from Cashel, stop at Cahir Castle and on to Kinsale to sightsee and then drive back to Cashel all in one day>

Thanks in advance..

Joan; I believe you!

NB In 1996 we still used pounds sterling and Irish punds here. The Euro came in only in 2002 so probaby that is when it all changed?

But we have used ATMs across the North West and they are all the same. There is a list comes up asking you to press a button for the amount you want;  there is a list of amounts to press that goes only to E200.

You cannot thus ask for more than that; not as if you can type in the amount you are asking for.

Unless you start over with a new transaction or a different card?

There is no choice; it must have been changed recently.
I have used ATMs only the last few years.

Ah well!! No doubt a way will be found; I imagine that you can just go into the bank and do it the "old fashioned" way and ask for whatever you need.

Blessings

Just read something in the paper Sun which deals with the ATM. A traveler to Germany used her ATM card 3 times and asked for 300 EUROS ea time. 4th time asked by 500 eurs and it did not work. Message said to contact bank. When they contacted bank the 500 euros was over the $600 limit at their bank. Computer automatically put a block on card. Once bock was removed they were able to use ATM again. But this also meant a call back to the States. So I guess the moral of the story is, don't try and take out more than the conversion etc allows.

Hi Judy
I pulled my notes from our June 2006 trip. We use cash/ATM as much as possible so I had to keep good records.
I took 300 E out seven times-
Kinsale
Killarney
Dingle(twice)
Carrick on Shannon(twice)
Birr
Make sure you keep track of your withdrawals and the exchange rate. The receipt will not give you a balance of your account.

Susan,

Thanks for taking the time to get out your notes. Perhaps the different amounts are tied to each individual's maximum allowance from their bank or credit union.

Thanks Susan,

I will be talking to my bank next month to get a temporary raise in the amt I can withdraw at one time.  Then take in account for the conversion rate.  Maybe like Michelle says, it's attributed to my own bank.  I'm down to the single digit weeks now before I leave.  Am getting so excited.
